Dana?

Recommended Posts

i just rememberd the previous owner told me that my jeep has a dana something front end. at the time it didn't really mean anything to me cuz i didnt know a damn thing about xjs, but now that i see praise for the dana i was wondering if theres a way i could just look at it to see exactly what it was, or would it look like a stock one? and if my xj actually has something good on it(which would be a nice surprise) what exactly is better about the dana than the stock?

Nothing. Except for the optional heavy-duty rear axle in 1986, ALL MJ axles are Dana. The fronts are Dana 30s. The standard rear axles were dana 35s, and the optional rear from 1987 through 1992 were Dana 44s.

Doesn't sound like there's anything special about your front axle, unless he swapped in a Dana 44 from some other vehicle.

On one hand it's just an ordinary Jeep front axle. There are millions of them out there. We see them every day.

But on the other hand, it's probably the best light-duty front axle ever (especially the later models that got the bigger U-joints). Other small rigs got stuck with IFS or low-pinion axles. AMC was kind enough to give us a high-pinion solid front axle. It'll take on 33" tires (if you aren't stupid with the skinny pedal).
