Painting Comanche

Recommended Posts

I kno that this isn't really a techinical problem, but my 89 MJ is primed and ready to paint as I am still looking for the right tube bumper that I like, I seem to have ran into a problem. I can not seem to find the paint code anywhere on this truck. I am painting it the same color that it was (RED), but I know that there are many shades of each color. Any advice on what I should do? I really like the comanche chief red colors. It is important to me that it pretty much matches what is inside the doors. Thanks for the help.

It's called Colorado Red, and I think the paint code was PE4.

Check an auto paint store and ask them if that code sounds right.

The code should be on a metal plate on the upper radiator cross brace, and also on a plate on the driver's door.

I could not find it in the door, but I did not even think about looking anywhere near the radiator. Thanks I'll check that out. Do you know if the colorado red matches well with other reds about the same color I believ?

Match? If you have an 89 MJ that's red, the color IS Colorado red. But the new paint won't match any old paint that has been exposed to sunlight. It gets darker with exposure. Correctly mixed Colorado Red will match your paint where it has been protected, like under the hood and on the door jambs.

If you're painting just certain panels, that's a problem. If you're repainting the entire vehicle, it won't matter.

I just found an old book here at the dealership with paint codes for that year...

Colorado Red = PE4

Bright Red = PE3

The book is not specific about which vehicles the colors apply to, but it says that they were used from '87 - '89.
