mvusse Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 The transmission may need to be swapped alongside the engine. If your 2.5 has an AX 5, there is no way to bolt that onto a 4.0 that I know of, nor would it last if that were possible.
FLASHBACK Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 YA IT IS AN 88 AND IF WAS TO DO THE SWAP I WOULD SWAP MOTOR TRANYY TCASE AND ALL THAT JAZZ.

FLASHBACK Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 ya i know I'm sorry work computer is always on caps
JeepcoMJ Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 i assumed he knows about the transmission issues since he said he'd just buy a parts xj and swap it all over. only thing you should need made would be the rear driveshaft.
FLASHBACK Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 and for that i could also find a long bed 4x4 mj and just use that drive shaft correct? or have mine shortend since i have a 2wd
JeepcoMJ Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 and for that i could also find a long bed 4x4 mj and just use that drive shaft correct? or have mine shortend since i have a 2wd do you have a longbed? if so, then yes just get a longbed 4wd driveshaft from a longbed which has the same motor as you are putting in. also, a 2wd shortbed rear driveshaft may work in the back of a 4wd longbed...but there are many variables there...I'm using a 2wd shortbed 4.0 auto dana 44 equipped rear shaft in my lwb 2.8 4x4 5 speed which now has a dana 44...no problems as of yet.
FLASHBACK Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 ok sounds good man i will worry about the drive shaft when i figure out what the hell I'm doing. Thanks for your input Travis
JeepcoMJ Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 ok sounds good man i will worry about the drive shaft when i figure out what the hell I'm doing. Thanks for your input Travis you have a longbed or a shortbed?
JeepcoMJ Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 oh sorry i have a long bed lol. ok, if you are putting an automatic transmission (aw4) and 4.0 in it, then a swb driveshaft may work...depending on what rear axle you have.
FLASHBACK Posted July 2, 2008 Author Posted July 2, 2008 problem solved, i found an ax-5 and a 231 from a 97 tj so looks like I'm staying with a 4cyl. Probably better off that way, gas prices are going crazy up here.
