I am not very used to auto's and so far i have used (when in 4-LO off course) D on flat ground and uphill, and 1-2 when in extreme crawling situations or in need of compression braking going downhill. I have the impression that it shifts smoother and faster in D than in 3 or 1-2 thats why i prefeer to use D as much as possible.
