This was done back when I first bought it in 2007. I've only put around 3000 miles on it since. This is not a daily driver. It's my toy/hobby/project/mental exercise. I had another distributor with me when I went back to retrieve it from the woods. Didn't put it in though, because it started and ran O.K. What really had me appalled and taken aback was the amount of smoke it was putting out while it was misfiring. Looked like Seafoam x 2.

Now it has me really confused. After I came home and gathered up some tools and parts, and went back to start working on it, It starts right up and runs smoothly. Seems I have an intermittent problem. Well, the search begins! Will share when the problem is located.

What would be the most common cause for a 4.0 engine to jump timing. I drove my Comanche to the woods this morning to go hunting. Everything ran fine. When I got ready to leave, The engine would turn over, but it would not fire. After some tinkering, I finally got it to start, but it won't idle, and it runs extremely rough. Not to mention, it smokes like the woods is on fire. I know that the timing has somehow gotten waaay off.

Say What? I've done that on 3 of them so far. It's thicker than brake fluid so it doesn't leak I figured I had little to lose, and a hunting season without time lost due to swapping transmissions to gain if this worked. It does!!! Many thanks, Carnuck! Now, instead of going to Auto Zone, I go to Winn Dixie.

Is there no aftermarket support?
jeephack replied to SW86's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That bumper will fit the MJ... one of the few that I've seen out there for our trucks. It's not a bad bumper for a stock replacement look. I've had one on my truck for a while now. I would reccommend coating the inside of it with a good undercoat to help it last because the black powdercoat is not the greatest. I have one of these bumper on one of my MJ's. Fits good and not a bad price. For anyone considering one of these, I might suggest "partsgeek.com". That's where mine came from. $143.94. Please excuse my not posting the link. I'm an old phart and computers are still quite a bit foreign to me. Jeephack -
Maybe it was both?? I replaced the master yesterday afternoon and bled the lines. Drove it awhile and everything worked fine. This afternoon, I get in it to go hunting and---no clutch pedal whatsoever. Upon further inspection, I also found a large pool of brake fluid underneath the transmission. Guess it's time to retire the goat. I'm going to be bugging you guys for lots of information. Engine swaps I have done. Never transmissions. Any pertinent pre-wrenching suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Jeephack

It was the master. Replacing one bad master with another bad one kind of complicates diagnosis somewhat. I'm not "planning" a swap. I just have the AW4 waiting in the wings if the goat ever breaks. Thanks for the help guys. Jeephack

May I prevail upon the learned MJ minds of the forum as to their opinions on a problem that has just arisen with my MJ? I have an '87, 4.0, 5 speed. Upon getting ready to leave the woods after an evening of bowhunting, I found that my clutch wouldn't engage. No pedal whatsoever. Upon checking the clutch master cylinder, it was found to be devoid of fluid. After getting it home, I refilled the master with fluid, and after a few pumps of the pedal, it was functioning properly again, but it didn't "feel" quite right. I decided that the line needed to be bled. Now, after being bled, I can get no pedal at all again. I have bled the lines 3 or 4 times, and nothing I do will get the clutch functioning again. I can start the engine, pump the pedal like a madman 8 or ten times and get it to go into gear and hold, but as soon as the pedal is released, I have no clutch again. Does this sound more like the master needs to be rebuilt, or the slave cylinder gone bad? Master cylinder is no problem, but if I have to pull the transmission, it will not return. I have an AW4 with an NP242 waiting in the weeds. Your opinions greatly appreciated! Jeephack

As a matter of fact, I do. Inside a small LED flashlight that I keep in my pocket, along with a lighter and my pocket knife. I try never to leave home without them.

Went yard saleing with the wife this morning. Ran across these . As my son's MJ came without any kind of speakers, I decided to take a chance that we could make these work. I'm not really heavy into audio so I'm asking the audiophiles among us what it is that I have purchased, and if I can make them function. If not...well I've pissed away more than $5 on a good cigar before. Anyone???

....while pulling parts at the local jy, 3 different people try to remove your taillights.

East Coast. About 45 mins. from Morehead City. I went back this afternoon after work to look around some more. I went in with a machete and did a little landscaping so that I could see better and found that joy filled first appearances can be a little deceiving. The back bumper had a couple of rolled up areas underneath that weren't visible until the weeds were cut back. Still not too bad though. The bed has a vertical indention on the driver's side and a couple of spots of surface rust. The front end had been smacked a whole lot harder than I first thought. This is the worst side of the bed. Does the wheel really sit that far back? Mudflaps anyone? I've read of you guys swapping later model brake boosters into your 'manches. Would one like this work? This is the only shot I could get of the rear end. Keep in mind that the rear tires were flat, I'm 5'10", 235, and 57 yrs. old. My rotund arse would not fit under there. I had to shove my arm in, hit the button and hope for the best!

Don't know about that. This is a small, one owner operation but he does stay somewhat informed as I found out when I asked the price of the taillights. He said he had to go inside and check online and see what they were going for. When he asked me what shape they were in, I had to be brutally honest and tell him that they were in excellent shape. ( hopefully to further my reputation for honesty and integrity, and build on that rapport I spoke of earlier) But then again, you may be onto something. When he first came back, he wanted $50 apiece for the taillights and $60 for the seat. After a period of getting better acquainted and talking on things other than auto parts, I got the seat and taillights for $100, and he threw in the headliner, which I need badly. My Comanche doesn't have one and my son's does, and it's amazing how much quieter his is than mine. I still haven't given up on the idea of acquiring the entire vehicle though. Just taking things slow and see what may be arranged.
-
I asked about purchasing the whole vehicle. The guy said that he wasn't allowed to sell an entire vehicle. I didn't press him on the issue because I plan on building a good rapport with him. This little yard is only 6 miles from my driveway. That little corner roll on the bumper in the next to last picture is about the worst spot on it. Didn't get a chance to look under it to see what kind of rear end it had. It was getting close to closing time. The truck had been smacked in the front end. Header and fenders were pretty much trashed, but from the fenders back, the truck was in amazing shape other than the faded paint. It will probably end up in my garage a piece at the time.

Finally took the leap yesterday and went junk yarding. I had been looking at a small rural yard not too far from home. Called the guy to inquire as to what he might have. Said he had a few older Cherokees, didn't know what a Comanche was. Decided to go have a look. Guess what I found hiding in the weeds! Do you think $100 was too much for the seat, taillights, and headliner? Sorry about the picture quality, I was using my cell phone, and it was very bright outside.

Jim, Were you ever able to overcome your software problem? I would love to get the dimensions for the sideplates. Jeephack

A most excellent writeup, and the photos were priceless. Everything is back together now, and everything works but the clock. I can live with that. Many thanks mfpdm!!

And now I feel like such a dumba$z for not realizing that. Duuhh!

I hadn't thought about it, but I'm also doing a little front end body work and have the front bumper and vacuum reservoir off. Could that be the cause?

I just finished swapping the fuse block and dash harness from a '90 XJ into my son's '87 MJ. I know that this sounds far-fetched, but is there any reason why this not so simple act could cause the engine to idle higher? Before the swap, it was idling fine, now it idles at between 2500 to 3000. Any ideas? Jeephack

:dunno: I'm an old phart. Still trying to figure out where the film goes. I did stumble across a wonderful implement called "search" this afternoon, and found a write-up by mfpdm that was exactly what I was looking for. I should be able to take the information gleaned from that write-up and make things work. Thanks, Jeephack

So, apparently a '90 XJ harness and a '87 MJ harness are not totally interchangeable.
-
Can someone enlighten me as to what this connector goes to? It is located behind the driver's side kick panel. I'm swapping out the dashboard harness and fuse block from an XJ, and after getting the harness all nice and neatly attached to the dash, I find that there is no female end on the XJ harness for this connector. Image Not Found
