  1. So, I need a 4 wheeldrive output shaft? If so, then getting a complete tranny/Tcase would be the way to go it seems. I was just hoping to remove the tailshaft and bolt the Tcase up. I didn't think I could but hope springs eternal...
  2. Pete, can you elaborate on what I would run into with the 2 wheeldrive tranny?
  3. I've searched but haven't found my answer. I have an '89 Eliminator and that means 2 wheeldrive. I have the AX15. I want to convert to 4 wheeldrive. Will a transfercase from an XJ/MJ AX15 bolt up to my AX15? My question refers to the output shaft of the 2 wheeldrive tranny. Another route might be a NP219 or NP208 from my FSJs. Both are from behind TC727s. I don't really need the strength of the FSJ cases, its just that I already own them and know them to be good. As I understand things, I'll need the tranny/Tcase adapter for a D300 Tcase to swap them in and I would guess, driveshaft mods. Seems it would be easier to use the XJ/MJ parts. Any knowledge and/or links would be appreciated.
  4. I would agree that a FSJ is not the vehicle for a 17 year old. They require maintenance and I mean MAINTENANCE. They are great vehicles but AMC was on its way down. The quality just isn't there. Things inproved somewhat for the last few years under Chryco but Chryco knew the vehicles were going to be discontinued so developement ceased after they made their intial changes. If you decide to get it anyway, check the frame next to the gas tank. The gas tank skid plate coupled with the gas tank design (a bulge on the side that fit into the frame channel) trapped mud and moisture and the frames rotted terribly in that area because of that. The carb would be a Motorcraft 2150 2bbl. A good carb as carbs go. The tranny is a Chryco 727, tranfercase is a NP229, front axle is D44, rear axle is likely an AMC model20 (round backside like a basketball, a good axle nonetheless), but could be a D44 (they went back to the D44 sometime around those years). For info in the Waggy, go to the IFSJA. Good people that will welcome you and your questions and they have a wealth of FSJ knowledge there.
  5. I have had one magmount antenna cut and taken (I have had several over the years, only one taken). I advise against them for only that reason. I have never had one fall over while driving and they have always worked fine. Can't help with the coax routing, sorry.
  6. A 9' whip is a quarter-wave antenna. The most efficient and simple antenna. Just 9' of radiating element and a mount. Anything physically shorter requires some serious design work to work effectively. If you go with a shorter antenna, realize that it is a compromise. They can still work really well, just get a good one. Wilson and K40 are very popular and they both offer different designs. Avoid that glass mount antenna! Garbage! HAVE THE ANTENNA TUNED! This is VERY important. Transmiting antennas MUST be properly tuned and the only way to do that is with an SWR meter. Pretty much any CB or Ham shop can do that for you for a nominal fee. I have K-40 and Wilson hf antennas and am happy with their performance. I have both, fiberglass and base loaded whip Wilsons. I haven't seen or used antennas that are a better value. Larsen makes excellent antennas and I used them for my 2 meter Ham radio but have not used anything for the lower frequencies and they are more costly. I would guess all their antennas are of superior design and quality, just like their VHF antennas. In short, avoid the glass mount, get a good antenna and have it tuned.
  7. AX15! Did a compression check on the engine today, just for grins. 10 psi on #5. Oopsy. Gonna get a junkyard engine for now and build a stroker this fall or winter. So many hoses and wires...........:(
  8. Info I have from another site basically says I would be just as well off getting an AX15 with the transfercase already on it rather than trying to convert my tranny. I figured it would wind up that way. Thanks.
  9. There are 3 in town. A brown, 4 cylinder longbed, and another shortbed, that is a similar red color to mine. It even has a red fiberglass topper but a different style than mine. Thats it for here.
  10. Hi guys, just found this place and now will procede to ask a lot of questions. I have an '89 Comanche 4.0 and 5spd. I have heard of both, the AX15 and the Ba/10 being used in this year. Is this correct? I'm not yet sure which one I have, its never been a concern til now (the truck is 60 miles away at a friend's farm so I can't run out and check). I did, however, purchase a full set of factory service manuals for it and it contained a service manual for the AX15 so that's encouraging. My truck has a clutch slave cylinder inside the bellhousing if that helps determine what I have. I have a blown engine and am planning to replace it in the next couple of weeks or so. I have found an XJ Waggy that I can get for cheap that has a good engine. I have to buy the whole truck though, so I thought I may as well use the front axle and take this opportunity to 4 wheeldrive my 2 wheeldrive truck. The Waggy has an auto tranny and I plan to keep my 5 spd. The work involved in swapping to an auto is beyond what I am willing to do at this time. Will the auto Tcase fit up to my 5 spd? To mount a Tcase on my 5 spd, what do I need? Just remove the tailshaft housing? Do I need to replace the output shaft? Is there an adapter between the tranny and the Tcase? If so, are the auto and manual adapters different? I also have access to a newly rebuilt 258 in the crate. Can I just install the 4.0 head and accessories on this '79 258 long block and use that in my truck? Long winded first post but I have had these questions bouncing around in the vast emptyness of my head for a while now. :D
  11. Hello folks, Name is Rande, longtime full size Jeep guy, fairly new to the mid-size Jeeps. Bought a 1989 Comanche Eliminator 2 wheeldrive, 4.0, 5 spd truck. I have had it about 2 years now and just tonight found this site. Here's a pic of my truck taken the day I bought it. I've done a lot of maintenance work that the PO neglected. Drove it to NC and back last summer. Earlier this summer, the engine blew. Will finally be getting it replaced soon. Hoping to 4 wheeldrive it also this year. I live in southeastern Minnesota in the town of Winona, two blocks from the Mississippi river.
