I need a red one with a bunch of rust and a white topper (longbed) ;)

Are there any differences between the tranny in the 94 wrangler and my 87 comanche tranny, in terms of input/output shaft lengths, internal/external slave, or spline counts? Would I have to use my current bellhousing or one from the 94 Wrangler?

Tail lamp assembly problem

Kinda off topic, but I have a similar question. Everytime my blinker blinks, the lights on my radio fade slightly. What is causing this? -
What transmission came in a 94 YJ with 4 cyl. 5 sp? Is that the AX-5? Would it fit into my 87 MJ with 4 cyl. 5sp? From another thread I was told: 1) the holes on a YJ tranny are slightly offset, which means I would have to alter my floorplan slightly to allow room for the t-case. 2) I would have to swap shifter handles. 3) there may be differences with the tranny mount. Does all this still hold true, if this tranny is swappable? Are there any differences between this tranny and mine, in terms of input/output shaft lengths, internal/external slave, or spline counts?

Just throwing this out there. I believe the term for the bracket that splits the e-brake cable is called the "equalizer." Hopefully, some common lingo will help us communicate with eachother easier.
-
The picture of the tranny looks like an AX-5 or AX-4, but I'm not sure. Does the T-4 look similar to these? In your opinion, which is the better t-case? The 231, 207, or 228?
-
I'm thinking of swapping them because my current transmission is in bad shape. Bad bearings, apparently, from what others have told me. Could go with a rebuild kit, but would have no clue what to do. I found this tranny and t-case forsale pretty cheap and nearby, so I am just throwing around some ideas. But for now I am too broke to do the job right, so something cheap might be the best option so that I am prepaired when my tranny finally craps out. Feel free to set up a charity event to raise money for me. :laughin:

Well, I have some more transmission questions. What transmission and transfer case came in an '85 Cherokee with the 2.5L and 4 speed, (#SF895300xxxx)? Would that be an AX-4 with NP231? I am wondering if it could replace my AX-5 in an '87 Comanche with the 2.5L? Would there be any disadvantages by switching from the AX-5 to the AX-4, besides losing overdrive and not getting as good gas mileage? Is it possible to add 5th gear to an AX-4 "easily"?
-
Just out of curiosity, what kind of gas mileage are you guys getting with your comanches, both stock and altered? Give your alterations if any along with the mileage. Mine: '87 MJ, 2.5L, 5sp, 4x4, Longbed, all stock, except no catalytic converter: 19-21mpg or so
-
Yup to all of that? Are there any other drawbacks to switching to an AX4?
-
Oops, the AX-4 isn't an automatic is it. Could the AX-4 replace my AX-5? I would just lose overdrive correct?
-
Thanks for your all the help. Just out of curiosity would an AX-4 mate up to my 2.5 and transfer case? How difficult would it be to convert to the automatic?

From what you guys have told me, it will work with a little fabrication, but doesn't sound too difficult. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'll probably have to pound into my floorpan to allow the t-case to fit because the holes on the Wrangler tranny are slightly offset. How far offset are we talking? Then I can replace the shifter handle with my current handle? Is this something that a person with little mechanical experience can handle? Will my current tranny mount give me any difficulty? Jeepthing07: was the external throw out made on an '88 tranny/bellhousing?
-
Will an AX-5 tranny and bellhousing from an 88 Wrangler with the 2.5 fit onto and 87 Comanche with the 2.5?

ZJ and XJ/MJ coils the same?

I'll take the MJ springs. -

Ok, thanks. It just seemed odd that only one of them wasn't drained. Any ideas on the chattering sound?
-
I replaced the valve cover on my 87 MJ today, and noticed that one of the rocker arms had a puddle of oil in it. Is the oil suppose to drain out of the rocker arm 'depressions'? I've also recently noticed a chattering sound from my engine coming from either the throttle body or within the valve cover. What could this be?
-
Well......I am looking at a rebuild kit for my transmission. I found one that says "Jeep Wrangler AX5 Overhaul Kit 88-up." The kit comes with synchros, bearings, and gaskets. Would this fit into my 87 Comanche AX5? Is there a difference in the AX5 throughout its production? Would a kit like this help to solve the bearing problem I am having?
-
So would it help to stay in 4th gear more often?
-
Thanks, that is helpful information. Someone else mentioned to me that it could be the "pocket bearing." Does this sound correct? How long before it starts causing other problems? Anyone got an extra AX5, or know where to get a good rebuild kit?
-
Yes, the pilot bearing was replaced with the clutch kit. I've also determined the noise does not occur in 4th gear. Any other ideas as to what this might be?
-
Pilot bearing eh? I had a mechanic put in the clutch kit. You'd think he would have at least checked that if not replaced it, don't you think? On the box of the kit it said it included the "pilot bearing (where applicable)" whatever that means. So what does the pilot bearing, and why would it cause a noise like this? How long before other problems start happening? Thanks
