  1. I am in need of a tranny for my MJ (AX-5). I found a 4cyl 89 YJ engine, tranny, and transfer case for sale. First of all, could these swap into my MJ? Or at least will the tranny replace mine (except for the small clocking difference of the t-case?)? Would it be better to swap in everything together, or just swap the tranny? I am confident of my t-case and engine, but this engine has about 40,000 less miles. Is there anything I should ask the seller about, or look out for, or see if it is included in the sale?
  2. Why do the T-4/T-5's suck? Even as a daily driver, no rock climbing or such? So the AX-15 won't bolt right in place of a BA10/5?
  3. Will a T-4/T-5 transmission match up to the 2.5L to replace my AX-5? Is the T-4/T-5 a better tranny than the AX-4/AX-5? Also, will an AX-15 replace the BA10/5?
  4. Nevermind, I got it going. The battery was a little weak, so I jumped it with another vehicle and finally got it to start up. Thanks.
  5. sorry, it turns over but won't fire. haven't had any problems before with spark. I figure it is something related to the cold. How can I check if the injector is squirting gas into the TB? I put about another half gallon of gas in with some gasoline anitfreeze and am digging out my long extension cord to plug it in.
  6. Got about a foot of snow and it's probably in the negatives with the windchill. The MJ won't start. Chugs, but won't turn over, almost like it's not getting any gas. I only had about a gallon of gas left in my tank. Is it possible the fuel lines got ice in them? Everything else seems normal, I haven't been having any problems with it. What could the problem be, and what can I do to fix it? I have one of those heater plugs for my radiator, or whatever it is...would it help to plug that in? Help
  7. So how much $ do you think all that is worth?
  8. Well, it's suppose to be a 5 speed? So AX-5?
  9. Yeah it has been cooler lately. Thanks!
  10. So here are a couple pictures of the 2.8L V-6 I was looking at. http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2006309410098834518IkJLaE http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2230196600098834518niHOTj Can anybody tell what tranny and t-case those are? They have about 90,000 miles and alot of those miles came from being towed behind a motorhome. It ran good and had great oil pressure. How much do you guys/gals think it's worth?
  11. About a gallon of diesel fuel. No, umm, Coastal 80W 90 gear oil--around 3.75 quarts.
  12. So, I changed my transmission fluid about two weeks ago, and since then shifting into second gear grinds. It seems to only do it for a while after startup. When I try to shift into second it grinds and feels like I didn't push in the clutch in all the way or something. Why would a fluid change cause this?
  13. wow that is a great site
  14. oops guess it took me too long to write that. Actually I have the 2.5L engine...I just need a tranny. Can someone teach me how to quote people correctly?
  15. Hey, quit stealing my topic! No, these are all excellent questions and answers. 8) But anyway, is there much of a demand for the 2.8 L engine? Or the NP 207 or 228/229? Correct me if I'm wrong--the AX-5 has a 14 spline input shaft and the T-5 has a 10 spline input shaft, so the T-5 could not replace the AX-5?? I think pre '88 usually has a 207 and '88+ has 231. Doesn't the shifter selections usually indicate if you have selc-trac or command-trac??
  16. What 5-speed transmission and t-case came behind the 2.8L V-6 in an '85 Cherokee? AX-5 and NP207? Is there much of a demand for the 2.8L engine and 207 t-case? I found a complete engine, transmission, t-case setup for sale, but only need the transmission. I was hoping I could sell the engine and t-case to make my money back.
  17. Ok, well I'm allowed to be an idiot every once in a while. I always thought that after you change it you should start it up and check the level and check for leaks. My bad. I do get a little bit of oil in the air filter.
  18. I just changed the oil in my MJ today and started it up to check the fluid. When I pulled out the dipstick I could hear it sucking air down into the tube. Is this normal? I've never noticed it before.

  20. So has anyone tried motor oil in the tranny yet? Results? Can motor oil be used in the AX-5 as well ('87)?
  21. Be careful not to break the 'bolts' on the brackets, and also not to bend the holes the 'bolt' end fits into. If it is rusted like mine was, it might be best to get brackets and bolts along with a tank, and then cut the bolts off yours so that you don't risk bending or breaking the holes. Also helps to run the tank nearly dry.
  22. I saw a guy that had compressed air inside a homemade rear bumper. Not sure how he did it, just an idea.
  23. anyone else have this occur?
  24. Does anyones MJ make a 'horn' sound when you shut the engine off? It's almost like a long goose honk. My dads 86 did it, and my 87 used to do it. What is this noise?
