Taps And Dies - What Sizes?
jamespwsullivan replied to jamespwsullivan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks Eagle. I'm glad I'm not imagining that weirdness about the mix of fasteners. And a buddy of mine just suggested those same HF sets. If I find that I'm using certain sizes more often I can buy singles. -
I haven't worked on any of my vehicles for at least ten years, but I'm getting back into it. My 1987 MJ and 1996 XJ will be my vehicles of choice. I no longer own any taps or dies and I want to get set up with the common sizes. I'm sure someone here has some suggestions. :-) Thanks in advance. I really appreciate those of you who share your experience and knowledge.

87 Mj Leaking Through The Firewall?
jamespwsullivan replied to jamespwsullivan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
KYMJ-that sounds like a plan. Where do you think it's coming in? Mountain Dude-Thanks. That's worth checking as well. -
So my Comanche has developed a leak n the passenger side. I had already replaced the windshield (a good buddy of mine has a windshield shop) and that did not take care of the problem. He even came back over and we hose tested everything. I am convinced it is not the windshield. I have removed the carpet and seat on the passenger side so I can see all of the floor and up onto the metal that goes vertical. I'm not sure if this is the actual firewall or of it's one side of a space between the cab and the actual firewall. it looks like the water is coming through/around the blower motor. I cannot see any water any higher inside the cab but I can see it trickling down from the blower motor hole. So if that is what's happening, how can it be getting there from the engine compartment? (I should add that this is happening when the truck is parked as well as when it's moving, so it is not coming off the road while moving.) There is a seal at the rear of the hood (is that the "cowl" seal?) that is pretty flattened out. The only place I haven't looked is to pull up the cover where the wiper motor is. Thanks in advance. I love old trucks!

I also have a long bed ('87), so I am following your conversation carefully. BTW, FWIW is a great song, but by Buffalo Springfield.

I don't have all of the data, but i think that the axles out of a 1977 and earlier Bronco are close to the correct width. One common set up was the Ford 9" rear and a Dana 44 front.

Alexia-I hope you hearing all of the good stuff we are saying about you and your work on this site. I'm a techie guy (though no forum hosting experience) and I know how much work goes on to get things set up and running. It can be a full time job. so thank you. I'm still not able to find my bookmarked threads. Am I missing something simple? Have I missed your answer? Thanks

new seats ,buckets ?

Thanks Pete. that does answer my question. I'll post a few pics of the Rugged Ridge seat installation when I get it done. It should go smoothly... Ha! -
new seats ,buckets ?
jamespwsullivan replied to 87 ghost's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK. I think I'm following this. I'm looking at some replacement seats from omix-ada (http://www.driveoffroad.com/rugged-ridge-13446-37/) that are supposed to be adaptable to 84-96 XJs. They come with some different bracket pieces but not true adapter plates. If you're interested download the installation manual and look at the last page. Of course, I'm wondering if they can be put in my MJ which has horrible bucket seats. So I removed the MJ passenger seat and took off the bracket. So far so good. I compared it to the drawings that have been posted a bunch of times (early in this thread for example) and they look like a match. What is confusing to me is that my 96 XJ brackets are not at all like the ones in that drawing. Now I can understand that these replacement seats could fit a bunch of different configurations of bracket since they come with hardware designed to adapt them. Based on what I've read in this thread I'm thinking there is another style of XJ bracket that is not shown in the drawings? I just don't see one that looks like the one in my 96. (four door no power no heat) If you can understand my ramblings this far you're doing well. My actual question is this... On the seat bracket drawings, what is the difference between the XJ bracket (labeled 'straight') and the MJ bracket (labeled 'bucket')? And are the two examples of each of those supposed to be the same or are they different depending on the side of the vehicle? I'll get these trucks figured out some day...maybe -

Thanks. I'll try and at least get through the IMPORTANT NOTE this weekend so I'll know if I need to alter the harness. -

@cruiser54 - Yes I have a multi-meter and actually know somewhat how to use it. Is the C101 the big ground at the fuse panel? -
I'm guessing that I'll get at least a couple of suggestions here. I have a 1987 Comanche with the original inline 6. I've only owned it for 6 months. It has about 245,000 miles on the odometer. Runs strong, compression is good across all cylinders. When I start it up it revs pretty high for 1-2 seconds. a couple of times it has wanted to stay at high revs (well past 1000 rpm-I don't have a tach) and I had to shut it down and wait for a few minutes. What should I be looking at? Thanks in advance. I'm loving the MJ so much I'm going to replace the floor pan in my XJ and keep them both.

I work for a company in the advertising specialties industry. We brand sell everything from pens and pencils to inflatable kayaks. Probably the biggest issue I have with what we do has to do with the source of our merchandise...China. And I'm talking about very close to 100% of it. The story I make up is simple. Here ins the United states most of us want stuff available cheap and fast. China has accommodated those desires. When I look at the tools that were available from China 20 years ago and the ones available today I can see that, with guidance form US companies, the Chinese manufacturing juggernaut has figured out which products need to be made at a higher quality and adjusted their QC to match. it is possible to source t-shirts and caps from the US. They are more expensive and much harder to find. Just to be clear, I am unhappy about the situation but I can't say I was disappointed to find that the cC products were from China. I expected it.

Dana 35 width question
jamespwsullivan replied to jamespwsullivan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just confirmed the ratio on my MJ today. It's 3.07 according to the BOM number on the front axle. No wonder the I6 can't push the thing through the wind in fifth gear! Think I'll pass on the 8.25. I'm probably going for the 4.10 combo in a Ford 9" (and maybe some disc brakes from a Ford 8.8") with another Dana 30 from either than MJ or XJ with a four cylinder. That's what I'm thinking right now. All the info O got on this thread has been really helpful in getting this stuff to the next phase. mvusse - For future reference I'm in Indianapolis. Still looking for other MJ parts. PM me if you have other stuff for sale. -
Thanks. And now that I know this it makes so much sense!

Dana 35 width question
jamespwsullivan replied to jamespwsullivan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
cody4359- Cool. The 8.8 is one of the options I'm considering. I also thought about a Ford 9" My buddy (not a Jeep guy) says that they are really easy to work on and if you need to shorten the axles it's not the worst thing in the world. What does "WMS" stand for? -
Dana 35 width question
jamespwsullivan replied to jamespwsullivan's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Blue88Comanche-Thanks. I did know that much. I'm planning on increasing my odds of getting something that will work by sourcing from additional vehicles. Wish I had a Dana 44 out of a Cherokee or MJ. That would make it really easy. MJRemi - that is very helpful. Did that 35 come out of a Comanche or Cherokee? if you know what year that would also be helpful (for the XJ) Thanks to both of you. -
I've been plunking around the Internet-forums and such-and I ran across the acronym WMS. Somehow it refers to measurements of axles and I think it's about the width. I'm pretty dull in the head right now (two nephews visiting-boy do they have a lot of energy!) and I can't figure out what WMS stands for. Anyone?
-
Two questions... 1)What is the width of the D35 in an MJ, outside axle flange to outside axle flange 2) Is this how the width is usually measured? I'm trying to compare to some sources for either a dana 44 or maybe a Ford rear end Thanks in advance. (BTW-Here's decent chart of Ford axles and applications. I couldn't find anything similar for the MJ or XJ. http://www.mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Ford ... sions.html

metric ton springs lifted?
jamespwsullivan replied to codymanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I can't speak from direct experience, but the truck with Hell Creek replacement leaves is a SWB, correct? So how would you know if the stock ride height is affected. I thought that the Metric Tonne (Big Ton) package was only for LWB MJs. Plus, if they're after market anyway, are you sure the Hell Creek leaves are built to the same spec as stock? Just askiin' Maybe I missed something. -
