also make sure no rodents have climbed up and chewed on the wiring going to the lights, i had that problem with a dakota i had! no only did the dam thing chew through the brake wiring in back but also chewed through some in the engine compartment for the ignition! :mad:

i just checked my vin # and what do you know, it's just like what i have. guess the PO or PO'S never changed anything. :D

hey twisted, the X member is where the spare tire holds against. the frame is in the shape of a big X, i don't know if thats what the factory calls it but thats what it looks like. ;)

don't forget the 2 bolts on the X crossmember. the one that the spare tire hold against. you have to access them through the hole under each bolt. and don't forget the parking brake bracket, just undo the 3 bolts. also the wiring harness will have to come off, unplug it at the drivers side, it's a big fat connector. good luck, i removed my bed by myself using an engine lift, attached rope to the 4 corner brackets in bed and it lifted right off.

anyone ever tried to make a trailer from a comanche? i know the cab will have to be cut off but i don't know how much of a pain that would be. just courious as i have an 86 that i might do that to. i have done that to other small trucks before but never to a unibody. :cheers:

Window problem and vac routings

i had the same problem with the window on mine. you have to replace the spiral wound wire thingy lol. it engages with some gears on the crank and that moves the window up & down. i just drilled out the rivets holding the one on and removed the bolt holong it to the widow and with some manuvering i got it out through the speaker hole. just put the new one back in the same way, and i didn't have any rivets big enough so i just used some small bolts and it works like new. also i lubed it up with some silicone lube and it is almost effort less to work. -
thanks guys, looks like i'll be looking for one in the 3 1/2 range. i'm going to take off the cover today and see whats in there, i bet it's in the mid 4's, the PO must have removed this axle from one that had some big tires and didn't think about the gears being different. :cheers:

i just picked up an 87 comanche, 2wd, 4.0L 5-speed dana 35 rear axle. someone has either replaced the gears or the whole axle, because going down the highway at 55 in 5th the engine is running around 2,300 and the speedo is almost 10 mph off( i know this because my wife was behind me and flashed the lights when she hit 55 in her car and i was showing 45). this will be a daighly driver, 99% highway ,and i want to replace the gears or complete axle and i want the rpms down around 1,500 at 55. what ratio do i need for that? also it has stock size tires i think are 225/75-15. or if someone has an axle thats geared like what i want and want to sell it or trade for some parts i have let me know.

ok thats what i thought, it seemed easier to replace the bearings then mess with the gears and trying to get em all shimed up just right. thanks :cheers: -
i have 2 rear axles, both are d35. 1 has bad bearings but good gears, other has bad gears but good bearings, i know the gears are a different ratio also but not sure what as i haven't opened them up yet. i want to make a useable axle out of the 2 but not sure which is easier to do. i know they are the cheap dana's and not the beefy 44 but it'll see highway use and not off-roading.

i have a 87 2wd 4.0L 5-speed, not sure what type the tranny is, here's the problem. when pushing in the clutch the bearing sounds like it's grinding and squealing, but the clutch works good. when the clutch is out there is no noise so i'm sure the bearing is shot. i know it has a internal slave cyl. as the line goes into the bellhousing. how hard is it to replace? i have never done that yet and was wondering if it's better left to the tranny shop. i have lots of tools and a garage but never had to mess with a manual before. thanks in advance.

pete, i tried using picturetrail but for some reason i couldn't upload any pics so another guy suggested using photobucket and i could upload them there, i don't know maybe the firewall thats on this computer was stoping the picturtrail from uploading any.

my comanche is starting to be hard to start either warm or cold. it's an 87, 4.0L 5-speed, 2wd. i know there are some sensors like the throttle position, and crank sensor, but i'm not familiar with any of them and how to test them to see if they are good or going bad. if anyone can help or send me some info on them i'd appreciate it. other then that it runs great. thanks in advance :cheers:
