  1. Yea, old cover will fit on the new engine. Aside from what i said to keep, take LOTS of pics, keep them organized and labeled if possible, and don't get rid of anything until your mj runs and drives without any issues. Theres not too many of us rockin the 2.8 anymore, and it was only made with a carb for 3 years, so keep everything till your completely done!
  2. i'm just trying to figure out how one timin cover spins one way and another spins the other way, that just makes no sense, Redwolf The timing cover doesnt spin. The water pumps spin, and they are bolted to the timing cover. With v belts everything spins the exact same as the crank pulley. With a serpentine belt, differnet accessories can spin different directions, depending on the routing of the belt. The newer engines use serpentine belts, and so the water pump on the new engine spins opposite of the water pump on your old engine. The water pump from the engine with v belts has a different bolt pattern than the water pump from the new engine. The correct water pump will not work on the newer timing cover.
  3. well I'm just telling you my experience with it, and i JUST finished that exact swap. One water pump spins backwards, and the difference is not noticable until you try to put the right pump on the wrong timing cover. don't believe me then just spend the money and find out for yourself.
  4. How about posting any info here? I've already done a '85 S10 swap into a '86 MJ but that was no sweat. Both Vbelts. I'm getting ready to swap a '93 2.8 from a S10 into a another '86 MJ. Would like to get as much info on it as possible. Basically thats all there is to it. The intake, valve covers, timing cover, water pump, and oil pan are different on the tbi engines. Oh and the motor mounts are different. Bolt to the engine the same, but the mj's frame mounts are different than the others iirc. Basically the only parts you can use from the newer engines without swapping everything for the tbi in is the block, heads, and internals. Take lots of pictures of all the electrical plugs and vacuum routings because theyre pretty complex. Looked through all my pics, and don't have any that really show the differences between the two, but if you pay attention to that, the differences are hard to miss. well i can't get the hermonic balencer off because i aint got the tool for it and me and my dad have been lookin at the blocks side by side and they look exactly alike same bolt pattern for the water pump too, Redwolf I pulled mine with a wheel puller. you can rent them from oreilly's autozone, etc. Does the new engine have a serp belt or v belts? If its the serp belt then i guarantee that you'll have to change it

  6. it needs to come off. the water pump for the new engine spins opposite of what the jeeps does because it uses a serp belt instead of v belts, and the original water pumps won't bolt to it
  7. Valve covers, intake, timing cover, oil pan. If theyre good all the accessories, tbi engines use a serp belt instead of the v belts. If you want pm me and ill send you any relevant pics, info, etc you want. Also keep all the vacuum components, thats the biggest headache youll have
  8. Yes. Just remember to keep all the aforementioned parts off of the mjs 2.8 if your staying carbd
  9. Seeing as how I just did a 2.8 swap out of an S10, I STRONGLY agree with this. Anything you can do to delete the emissions crap on it is worth while. I'm still fighting it, figuring out what goes where and what can be removed. Also, the 2.8 is horribly under powered. If you need a new engine, go with the 3.4 if you can find one! Also, if you do decide to go back with another 2.8, one from an 82(?)-84 S10 will be carbed, for a straight swap over. if its from a newer s10, blazer, jimmy, etc, then you will either have to wire in the tbi, or swap intakes, timing cover, water pump, oil pan, and valve covers from the jeep engine, because those were all changed with the switch from carbs to tbi thanks yall, i'll deffently keep this in mine when i go lookin for an engine, chances are i'll stick with the 2.8 just because that's what my truck had from the facotry, my MJ is a long term project truck and i'm gonna try to get it as stock as i can minus the audio system, but as long as the engine i pull is a 2.8, 3.1, or 3.4 and has a carb i should be fine right? Redwolf Even if it is a 2.8 with tbi it will work. Just keep the intake, oil pan, valve covers, and timing cover from your old engine and swap them over since they are different on tbi engines. I would try to find a newer engine just because the low end issues were solved later on

  12. Pump has 2 filters before it. One screws into pump, the other is a clear in line i added after the second one burnt up. Will the KOH/NaOH help remove rust? Is there any type of rust reformer i could coat the tank with to make it last longer?
  13. Truck is an 86 2.8, original carb, electric inline pump Just burnt up my third electric fuel pump, leaving me stranded on the side of the road. I know for sure i need to drop the tank to clean it out, because its sucking crap into the line and blocking it. Dropping the tank is pretty straightforward, but what can i do to clean it out, rust reform? or what would be a compatable swap? Also does anyone have any experience with holley inline pumps that could point me in the right direction?
  14. ok if i don't have a neutral safety switch could i have a clutch safety switch because i found a 2 prug switch on the passenger side for the transmission mount, Redwolf If clutch safety switch is what prevents it from starting without the clutch pedal depressed...then no, it doesnt have one. At least my 86/2.8/ax5 does not
  15. Tell me about it. We got all of your snow jim! just blowed right on east and dumped it all in my front yard! Nasty wet stuff. Gonna be all ice tomorrow if the temp keeps dropping!
  16. The arm for the inside door latch was off...idk about the lock. Randomly tried today and its works again, so i'm just gonna leave it alone for the time being

    3D Printing

Yea, I hear theres alot going around with people trying to print AR lower recievers, but from what I understand none of them have worked out too well. Still, I'd like to get my hands on one, just to try to make jeep taillights if nothing else!

    3D Printing

I hadn't even thought of that....that would be awesome. I'd like to be able to print polymers. One I've seen prints titanium alloys, then uses lasers to fuse the droplets into a solid object, THAT would be cool. Metal legos....

    3D Printing

Is anyone else as fascinated by 3D printing as I? Doing some research into it, supposedly the military is helping to fund research in printing with biodegradable plastics made with stem cells, to essentially print skin, bones, and different implants like ears/noses that will "take" like an organ transplant and then grow into skin/bone/etc of your own. There is a civilian market for printers using ABS plastics...and it got me thinking, why couldnt someone print MJ tailights? Or really any of the comanche specific parts we always search for? Does anyone have any experience with 3D printing? Be it hands on, watching, or just reading about it?
  20. Locked my passenger door for the first time the other day..unlocked it, and it wouldnt open. Managed to get the door panel off with the door shut, and despite disengaging the lock, neither the linkage for the inside or outside handle will open the door? Not sure what to do at this point.
  21. won't happen, i got it on the road! Drove it to work for the first time today and now i couldnt be happier! Still needs work to make it more reliable...but it is road worthy now!
  22. Best statement right there. It always seems to need something you didnt expect. You plan on fixing one thing, buy the new parts, finally find time to tackle it, and sure enough, something else catches your eye that needs a fixing as well. Or in my case, fix it, get it another step closer to driving, and something sets it back again. Hopefully not a big deal..but i am sensing a pattern here
  23. yea, its the 2.8. For now at least
  24. So this is really more of a rant to those who understand. I love my MJ, had her for 17 months now. Today I finally got her licensed and insured. I should be much happier, but she is STILL fighting me tooth and nail every step of the way. First try to get an inspection, the intake cracked and drained all my coolant. Fixed the intake, fuel pump broke. Fixed the fuel pump, and now its overheating. Not really that big of a deal, but its constantly, fix one thing, 5 break. I know eventually it will even out and I'll have the coolest truck out there, but still, its discouraging. If i didnt have so much money and pride tied up in her, id consider an xj. But too much money, much more pride, and everytime i see that tailgate i can't help but buy it new things. So she'll stay, despite being held together with dried blood and tears. Sorry for the rather pointless post. Just a rant to those who can understand and relate.
  25. my biggest issue is i don't want to put any more money into it than is necessary, and at the same time want to clean up the engine bay. i havr the motorcraft carb, but the s10 tbi intake would need to be bored out to work with the carb...hopefully my oe intake can be repaired....
