  1. Oye Mate, don't panic! I just went through the same same with my new to me '89. Hopefully this will take you to the relevant post: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=29434&p=297472&hilit=aw4+won%27t+shift#p297472 (if that doesn't work search for "AW4 won't shift") In the meantime to check that its not the tranny pull your TCU (trans computer) fuse. It's behind the lower trim panel under the glove box area on a harness. You shouldn't have to remove the panel/TCU, just the fuse. You should then be able to use the trans manually (start in 1-2 up to 3rd etc.) Be real careful when stopping and backing up. Bring everything to a complete stop before shifting. If you would like the AW4 manual and trouble shooting guide pm me. Also, lots of help available here. best, |Garry|
  2. Problem solved. The TPS tested bad. Found one at a wreckers, all is good now. Much Jeep Joy. For anyone with the same problem: To "bypass" the TCU so you can shift manually you do not have to disconnect the TCU, just pull the fuse. (no need to remove the lower dash panel). my thanks to posters
  3. I'm not sure if this is the answer you need. From my experience the best stuff to use is a made for purpose product. I could not find it at a retail shop because there is not much retail demand. It is usually used by car restorers and upholstery shops. It is the same stuff that is used with "sound packages" from the factory. it looks like its made from shreded rags and scrap threads which seem to be mostly man made fibres. It is not the same stuff they use in homes. Try auto upholstery shops. I found mine at the upholsterers supplier. It shouldn't cost more that $30 for the amt you need for an MJ cab. Best results if you glue it to the carpet, NOT the floor, or at least not all of the floor. Mask off one inch around the edge on the back side of your freshly shampood and dried carpet and spray it with contact cement. Also spray the underlay with contact cement. Leaving the edges without backing allows you to tuck under sill plates, under the dash etc. Same applies for around consoles... don't applying the backing right to the edge. The end result in in appearance, sound deadening, and comfort are worth the few bucks it costs. Jute can get real smelly when it gets wet.
  4. Thanks for the info. team. Right now my garage is tied up and it's just too cold and rainy for these old bones to be crawling underneath so I did all I could up top (cleaning and blowing out connectors). I did manage to get the local transmission guru to hook up his Snap On 2500. It gave an error code something to the effect that there was no output/signal from the TPS. Thats as far as that went, he had others waiting. I'm sposed to keep calling him till I can get into his shop and he is a very busy fellow indeed. (I live in a small town that is a ferry ride to the big city). When checking the fuse(s) I also disconnected the TCU and am able to shift manually. At this point I'm thinking it would be faster and in the long run cheaper to just replace the suspect items, otherwise I'm a pedestrian for a week or more. A TPS on-line runs $40 ~ $60 haven't checked the the price of the TCU but I would guess used is a good source? I have to get to the city this week to pick up my new (used) tailgate and dash panel and can *check the boneyards there for a TCU. What range of years and models of other Jeeps will work, just the XJ?... Again, thanks for taking the time to reply.
  5. Another victim of the pressure washer... so far I have disconnected and cleaned the main "double" connector on the firewall and the two connectors on the right rear side of the engine that head down towards the transmission. No joy yet. Tomorrow I plan on doing the same with the connectors ON the tranny. I have also read that I may have toasted the TCM. If cleaning the remaining connectors doesn't work I reckon it's the TCM. If that's the case what "other" TCM's will work? (from what vehicles and year range) I don't have a huge choice of wreckers here, but there are 2 Cherokees that I know of.... greatly appreciate the help.
  6. G'Day all! (First post) … and I am so glad that someone else started this thread. I searched the the forum and could not find definitive answers. I tried briefly on the yahoo forum but it makes my eyes (and head) hurt with all the ads jumping around. Wow! This is sooo much nicer. My '89/4.0/automatic/column shift has idiot lights. I have bought the cluster and sending units from an '88/4.0/5spd. I also asked for as much harness as he is able to remove via plugs/connectors. Is this going to work without having to reinvent the wheel? That's my first question. Second: (should I start a new thread)? I have a small mechanical/electrical issue; The first time I put it in 4WD an indicator lit up “Part Time”. Problem is when I shifted back to 2WD (2H) the lamp stayed on. (yes, it does shift in and out no problem). I figure a sticky switch, where is it? or what else could be the issue? And lastly I'm on the Sunshine Coast (BC, Canada eh)) – anyone else here? I know I know... this should go into the newbies section...
