So I have been reading up on the A/C differences between the R134 and R12 systems and there is a crap load of opinions and depending on what you ask about you will get 20 million different responses. With that note ive decided since i can peice together an A/C system from a 96+ cherokee for a little over $60 bucks at the JY I'm gonna try this out. Here is my parts list: Compressor (mine has a bad bearing) $25 hoses $10 expansion valve evaporator $15 Condensor $15 The thing I'm interested in is the elec. fan switch issue. it never seems to be mentioned during these discussions. I know that it is controlled diffrently from the renix era to the the hi output era. If i put this newer a/c system will i need to adress this issue and possibly other electronic components that may not be compatable with the newer ac system? If i forgot any parts above feel free to tell me i fudged up haha

Well its been a long time since i posted on here. at the end of the school year things got pretty hectic and had absolutely no time to work on the truck. Now I'm back home staying with the parents for the summer cause i got an internship close to their place. (I already can't wait to get back out!) Well since my last posting ive changed my plans for the manche. I was gonna axle and tranny swap to make it a wheeler but now I'm just gonna fix it up and turn it into a cruiser. (It needs a lot of work) Today i tore the dash out for the heator core change. Unfortunately i broke the vacuum control valve in the process so ill have to go find one in the scrap yard. I'm also having trouble deciding whether or not i want to go throught the process of converting the ac to R134a since I'm in the neighborhood. Thats my up date. Jeep on

stereo head unit wont work.
bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
alright sweet tried it out and everything works now. It was the constant wire. For now I'm just running it off of switch power. ill put a new one in one of these free saturdays haha thanks for all the help. -
stereo head unit wont work.
bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ya I thought it was weird that the constant wire didn't have constant voltage. I did double check that I have the wires matched properly. The truck didn't come with a radio in it so I have no way of checking. My new ground is grounded at the same ground as the instrument panel ground. (Driver side metal part of the dash.) The head unit is a naxa. And no flashing lights or sounds come from it when turned to to acc. I have checked fuses but I can always triple check. So I'm thinkin it might be the constant wire from what your telling me. I just gotta figure out how to re route it properly. Is there any safe method to make sure the unit itself is actually good? -

Alright i checked it again with the back up power, after resetting and another newly installed ground wire. I bought an adapter harness that plugs into the original factory one. I checked the constant and I'm only measuring like 7-8 v and nothing when turned off. Something dosent seem right here... Any ideas? -

bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I checked with the Antenna Plugged in as well. I will check the fuse but I'm sure thats not the case cause i am getting power just won't turn on. When I'm measuring voltage I'm only getting 11.66 volts so maybe there is to much of a draw somwhere in the hot wire... not really sure what else it can be -

No.. haha really? Man I would kick myself in the arse if it was that simple :fs1: -
I have voltage all the way to the head units wiring harness but the head unit won't turn on when plugged in. It can't be a bad unit because I just bought it new and have tried this with two different units. I also installed a new ground thinking it was that. Obviously my fuses are good if I'm getting power to the back of the units harness. What is wrong? Any ideas appreciated.

Ok after a full day of driving it... you have convinced me. I'm gonna look into the ax15 swap.

Alright figured out the issue! Bad headlight switch! Replaced the headlight switch and everything started working again! I still have the turn indicators turn on with the head lights but thats no big deal. Atleast its not illegal to drive the comanche in the dark anymore haha I drove it around and i have to admit i love the stick in this baby... makes me sad that I'm going to be swapping it out. I also intstalled a fuel cut off switch in it as my only mode of antitheft. I am mostly just excited that I finally get to drive her around for a while!

ok so ive got some stuff done but not much. School has been pretty hectic especially with building our SAE baja car and all.. things ive accomplished: finished tearing out most of the interior cleaned up the firwall ground, dash ground, and rear tailight ground installed new battery ground wire (was burnt and missing insulation) installed new optima red top battery welded new brackets to my bucket seats bought SYE kit as well as the 2 low kit installed new park brake assembly here is the driver side bucket and the passenger side assembly without seat i prettty much followed mfpdm's write up on how to do the bracket conversion. (thanks for that) but instead of using bolts to attach them i just tig welded them straight in. i still can't figure out why my dash lights and my tailights won't work. i cleaned the grounds that i mentioned before and still no improvement. i was planning on doing the SYE and 2 low conversion on my T-case and installing my AW4 with the 8.8 rear but dosent sound like i can get around to it till after the summer. i got a call from superior crankshaft this morning and sounds like i will be scoring an internship there in orange county. its sweet but that means now work will be getting done on the manche :( i also have yet to find the leak in the manche. i pulled the trim off of the windsheild and from what i can tell the rubber is good and didnt find any bad areas. i also pulled the cowl cover off to see if i could find anything there but still nothing. :dunno: i plan on driving the truck around for a while to find the leak via the powder trick but i have to figure out the electrical issues first. you guys have any ideas? well hopefully things will keep moving forward.

AW4 clarification/double check
bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Haha that's funny I'm sry I actually didn't know that there was a difference between a a flexplate and a flywheel I guess I'm a dumba##. So what's a wrench again? Just wait manche will be posted in classified soon cause I can't handle it. Sry guys I give up -
AW4 clarification/double check
bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
you are correct i am doing the swap for the end result of 4wd. I do have a 4wd AW4 with its t-case. I plane on doing a slip yoke eliminator and driveline kit from advance adapters. I was just wondering about the actuall transmission swap. can't wait to be 4wd! -
AW4 clarification/double check
bajajunkie replied to bajajunkie's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok Awesome. well assuming the flywheel is compatible between the auto and manual i should have every thing i need to to do the swap. have you guys done this before? its seems like a brainless bolt in mod for the most part Changing to auto for personal prefrence and to scrap puegot (can't spell sry haha) tranny -
Ok I have done a crap ton (Standard crap ton) of research on the manual to AW4 tranny swap. Ive got an AW4 from a 90 that I am swapping into my 88 5sp. I am making a list of the electronics that i need to find. Let me know if a have left anything out. TCU - '86-'90 Transmission wire harness from '86-'90 TPS (as the Manual one is different than the Automatic) CPS (same issue as the TPS) Brake pedal Switch Power/comfort option switch Auto ignition switch (prevent from starting in anything other than P or N) If i have left anything out please let me know I am hoping to do this swap soon as i want to drive my manche ASAP haha. Also i have all the linkage and shifter components. The only thing i have missing is the t-case cross/support member. if you have any extra tips/advice for ease of installation please let me know.

Well it made the two hour drive from my parents house up north to my place which is awesome. i guess you never realize how reliable jeeps are till you own one. well i started by pulling out the carpet and come to find out i still got original paint on my floorboards! there wes about a 1/4" of water on the passenger side after i pulled the matt up. so gotta find that leak. Ill post some more photos soon of the interior rebuild progress.

Well today i made out with a deal of the century IMOP. I found a guy locally selling an aw4 and 231 for $100! come to find out he had just bought a brand new torque converter for it just before he wrecked his xj! came out a 90 4L xj and only has 153,000 on it. One step closer to my 4wd swap! :jump:

I just found out bout the closed and open cooling systems that are out there on the pre 90' mj and xj. I have searched through here naxja and pnwjeep to find as much info on this as possible. here is what ive gathered. the closed system is a presurized system that uses a temp switch in the t-stat housing to control the electric fan and causes much headache as far as maintenance goes. the open system is well ( I would say) "normal" cooling system. I know alot of guys convert from the closed to open systems and i plan to do this myself. here are the questions: 1. why in the world would someone want to stay with the closed system? it just seems like one more thing to worry about and way more complicated than it needs to be. 2. besides swapping out the radiator and putting in a reservoir what needs to be changed? new t-stat housing? temp switch to control electronic fan? thanks for any attempts to clear this up. oh and i remember reading a DIY thread on doing this. can't remember if it was here or elsewhere but it didnt seem very clear and it was way too rediculous considering he spent like $150 ("high-Flow") on a $15 t-stat housing he could get form napa.

wow good write up! pretty much sums up the basics of axles. what degree are you going for? Mechanical Engineering? -
Well working at work means you can work at the work the requires money from your manche to work haha
