New AX15, very chirpy but not the TOB

dry u-joints will chirp, I know you mentioned they feel tight, but the first sign of u-joint trouble for me outside of total failure was a squeak when vehicle is/was in motion, If the frequency stays the same or increases/decreases with speed tells me it is something consistent with a part that is turning (drivetrain) if you have serviceable u-joints I'd try loading them up and make sure that grease is going completely through the joint I have had zerk fittings on tractors and equipment that would not take grease, it's an easy check and not expensive -
Don't ever take that first trip, I've always enjoyed drag cars, we went to "round-tracking" when Bracket racing started getting big and heads up racing just got crazy expen$ive, BTW, the yard closest to me had several exploders and that was one reason I was considering the 8.8, but I don't recall any of the sport-tracks but I'll be looking, they did have several liberty's though, so I may investigate that more

Thanks Htchevyii, I've had a couple of chevy ii, and always wanted a BB 69 nova, I did own a 69 sb (406") camaro, but currently don't own any street cars and I kind of figured I'd check out the angle of the x-fer case/driveshaft, it was just that I watched one YT'er that stated to rotate the housing up 10 deg, the video failed to address if the vehicle was lifted or not, which made me question being under acceleration and rotation of the housing/springs if it would put the joints past optimum angles and add to low speed vibrations, I'd rather not lift the truck if i can get by with it, planning on that anyway???? of all the 4 X 4 vehicles I have owned, only a few of them have been lifted, and I have limited use of wedges, But the old bronco I had taught me a ton about changing U-joints and the big tires/wheels taught me about "unsprung" weight and gear ratio's

Thanks' 89MJ, I'm thinking about the 8.8 ford for the rear, I have a yard close by that has several, they have some that are open, and a few w 3.73-4.10 gear and LSD, I'm very familiar with 9' fords, but unsure if the LSD 8.8 would be better choice given the availability, I know I mentioned going with a 30-31 tire and noted your signature (and the lift), will I have clearance issues with stock ride height??? I also noted you have 8.8 in you sig. what did you shoot for on pinion angle, one YT'er I watched recently mentioned 10 deg, which seemed excessive to me at stock height, but my drag racing time I typically shot for -3 with a 4 link rear, so I got a little bit of a learning curve here, don't want to weld spring perches in and have drive-line issues, BTW, I looked at your Projects and they are very nice, I like the Bolen's and all the rest, but love the COE and the 64 chevelle, also subscribed to the YT I'll have a bunch of ????'s bear with me here's a shot of one of my old "beaters" 1.2 sec 60' and 5.80's 1/8 mi @117

I found a AX-15 w/a NP241 X-fer and bought it, I will do a build thread but it probably won't be as elaborate or as nice as some of the trucks I have seen here, there are some talented members here I like the idea of a lower gear and with a 30-31" the 4.10's may be the ticket, I like the performance of the buckshots and grip-spurs, but planning on some road time too so I'll probably go with an AT, not sure what plans I have for the differentials, I know I like lockers, most of my experience is with drag cars and roundy-round junk, but as stated I am a car/truck/motorcycle junkie, gas and diesel

Thanks Fiatslug Probably won't be doing any serious off roading, truck is still too solid and in decent enough shape that I plan on just mild stuff, like a 30-31" tire, stock ride height, don't really want a lift kit, and wanting to get the steering and brakes a little more "robust" thinking about the brake booster upgrade and checking on the condition of the front end, also working on weather stripping and door hardware, I'd also like to find a cluster with tach, It is a solid little truck, and I'd just like to make it what I want This forum seems to be a great source of info and help, hoping I'll be able to contribute also

No steering skid plate, and the only thing under the X member/transfer case is as pictured, plate under tank, but looks like what would/should be under anything the rear, looks like 4 leaf's, 1st chance I have really been able to look the truck over, even discovered it already has rear disk, and one of the "upgrades" I had planned was Liberty rear disk I just know the brakes are "weak" jeep frontend.jfif

Very nice work

Exactly what I did, once I got home with it I did have to do a little grinding, and I appreciate it

Yeah the leaking is a consideration, the noise is not so much of an issue for me cause if it's nice enough out I'll be windows down anyway, I got the window that is/was so sloppy apart today, I'll take some pics in the morning, but it appears the "stud" that runs up through the window frame has rusted to a point of failing/compromised, I've got use of a lathe and a mill so I believe I'll be able to duplicate the failed part close enough for functionality, the next project after I get the doors/windows like I'd like will be adding rear disk from a liberty, I've got to investigate that a little further and find out best year to look at/for, then swap the ax5 out for a ax15, just piddling really and something to do
-
got a pair of vent windows, and well, the drivers side is very loose, will open but it will not "stay put" upon disassembly I found that the part that goes into the bottom of the window appear to be "rusted away" I believe I can fab a suitable replacement/repair, but the spring/shaft is riveted to the bottom part of the frame, wonder if anyone has ever "rebuilt" any of these vent windows??? considering, cutting/drilling the rivets out and making a replacement shaft, and riveting the hardware back on, thought's??? I will post a pic or two tomorrow
