NEW MJ Fuel Sending Units
Monte721 replied to mrmel2you's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for that, I believe thats close enough to mine that its probably the same and roughly the same capacity. I'm thinking what happened was a previous owner stuck an xj sending unit in it so the gage is a little off and shows empty with several gallons left in the tank if that makes sense. I ended up ordering both sending units and will try the mj one out first and if it doesnt work will stick the xj one back in it and call it good. Thanks for all the responses. -
NEW MJ Fuel Sending Units
Monte721 replied to mrmel2you's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks! At first I thought it looks like the same tank, but I'm pretty sure mines not 18 gallons (Its possible the float arm was short and there was always more fuel in there than I thought). The MTS agent thought mine is a smaller aftermarket tank one with a XJ sending unit. I hate to ask a favor but do you have rough outer dimensions of your 18 gallon? My tank is 30"x17" at the squared lip x roughly 12" tall with the FSU hole pretty much in the middle (aftermarket xj and mj tanks look offcentered) -
NEW MJ Fuel Sending Units
Monte721 replied to mrmel2you's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
OK, its certainly side mounted towards the top. Theres no indication of any major modifications to the tank. If it was an xj tank and I got a replacement mj sending unit thats supposed to be in there, that would not work? From reading other posts and because It looks like a slightly different shape, it sounds like it could be modified but instead of getting to that, I'm wondering if theres any exterior indicators of what the tank is, I can't seem to find any. -
NEW MJ Fuel Sending Units
Monte721 replied to mrmel2you's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks, will keep that in mind. But after closer look, I may have a Cherokee sending unit that I pulled out of it, it has the straight fuel line inputs on the outside and looks to be shaped a little differently. I'm wondering if the entire tank and unit was replaced at somepoint. Are there any indicators on the outside of the tank if its for a comanche or cherokee so I know which sending unit to replace with? -

Wow thanks for sharing! looks like around $100 shipped so not too bad. http://www.mtscompany.com/sendingunits.htm -
Reposting from a similar thread but I replaced my fuel pump, and apparently the entire sending units are no longer available? My issue now after it was reinstalled is its leaking fuel from the center yellow electrical inlet which seems a little loose, without taking it back off yet and playing around with it, does anyone know if this an easy repair or require me to look for used one somewhere?

Pretty sure this link connects to a ballpoint on outside of the rear end and busted off on a trail. The other end seems to swivel side to side and is vaccuum? What is this for? It does not seem to operate any differently now that its hanging down. Thanks!

Appreciate that, is there a breakdown of what the codes are for? thanks

Thanks, just did finally!

replacement EGR for renix 4.0
Monte721 replied to 10thta's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
ok took it back off and tried that test, by pintle seals is that the circular hole at the bottom? that one does seem to hold air. The upper more oval shape one seems to slightly let air by. Not sure if this is still good or not but can't seem to find a replacement anyway. Thanks -

So blow on the upper vacuum port when its bolted up to make sure it doesn't leak air back into manifold? -

Monte721 replied to 10thta's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The line is there but not connected in the pic, I don't believe the line is leaking and looks to be in good condition but its also not shaped and long enough to fit comfortably with the replacement/larger single EGR. The issue was taking the original one off for cleaning, I compressed the valve and plugged the hole, it did not hold the vacuum in the valve well hence why I think it needs to be replaced. -
Thanks for confirmation and the helpful links, I believe completed most and have it running pretty well just a slight idle annoyance and wanted to see if IAC and TPS made the difference. I realize most ppl are if "it aint broke don't fix" crowd but its 35 years old and looks like have a lot of original parts so I would rather throw more small parts at it while I'm in it and cleaning now and have the old parts as spares than keep fixing small things as I go. Do you all know what normal idle should be? I suspect around 600-800? mine was turning up to 1500 when warm.

theres 2 different kinds of throttle position sensors, I believe one is for automatics and the other for manual trans although I can't find designations for which type is which. I have a manual trans and the one that was on it only has a female plug with one wire set plugged into it but theres another that just hangs off the side. There is a replacement TPS that has connections for both wire sets. I believe the duel wires were put in all models and the correct TPS for a manual would be the smaller replacement, leaving the extra wires off to the side. Can anyone confirm which one is which?

replacement EGR for renix 4.0
Monte721 replied to 10thta's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I ordered the "standard" one without the transducer, you can see the size difference. It does bolt up but because of the size, almost impossible to get a good angle to get both bolts tight, also the vacuum line is clearly not meant for it so I put the old one back on. The reason why I wanted to replace is when I took the old one off to clean, it does not hold vacuum well, there is no check engine light and no seemingly performance issue except possibly high and wondering idle but I manually adjusted lower to help. Does anyone know where to find a replacement original (smaller) EGR with the transducer thing? -

I have an '88 with the black plastic transducer thing (can't find replacement anywhere) It sounds like the more universal part #4F1413 bolts up and looks like you could just plug existing vac line into it. Did you have to do any mods? Does it perform as it should? thanks
