New to the "Comanche craze" and lovin' it
Brenton replied to Brenton's topic in Member Projects: Your Comanches
Something about this Jeep, that I somehow completely missed when I was test driving it, was the steering column job. I don't know why it was swapped, but it is obviously not the original. Aaand something was broken...so the PO decided the best fix was to wrap the column in a coke bottle, zip tie it, and paint it to "match" (see picture of interior on first page...you can just see the bottom of the column). I'm all for home brew fixes, but come on :shake: Besides cosmetics, nothing is wrong with the steering so I didn't want to pull it all out. So, I found a piece of tin, cut it to size, and.... ....its already 10x better, as far as I'm concerned. I plan on painting the rest of the column black or gray, and then replacing the steering wheel. Oh yeah, I also swapped out my grill for a 10 slot grill  -

I guess its about time for some kind of update...the Jeep has been through a few small mechanical fixes, 4x4 not working (fixed now), sold the black steels with Goodyear MTRs, got the stock turbines back on (for now). Looking to upgrade the lift. I want to go to a 4.5" lift with some new wheels and 31x10.50 Mickey Thompson MTZs. No major changes, just driving it all I can. -
Still got my first Comanche too!! Got it early 2010, so just about two years. 1988 Pioneer, 4x4, swb, with the always awesome 4.0 and a 5 speed. It was stock besides some sketchy exhaust work (first thing to go). As of now it has a 3" lift, stock turbines with 30x9.50s. Soon to be some new wheels with 31x10.50 Mickey Thompson MTZs. Been working out some mechanical kinks as I go. Just recently had some "mini tuneup" work done, including getting the four wheel drive back online. Lovin' it! If money and parking weren't an issue I would have a few more I'm sure. Comanches are like an illness that's fun to have.

Its like you read my mind! - medium regular t shirt, royal, tan logo - large heavy hoodie, ash, forest green logo

I've been wanting to replace my whole exhaust system...header/manifold to tip. Anything good out there for us? Thanks for any pointers.

What is an MJ worth these days?
Brenton replied to RynoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Man I wish the prices were like that around me. I bought mine for $2,200 :???: ...an 88 Pioneer, 4x4 swb, 5 speed with the 4.0. No upgrades besides an ugly dual exhaust which came off immediately. I paid $200 for a gutted MJ...just the frame and body, and partial interior. It did have a title though  I still look on CL in the surrounding area and the cheapest I've found is $1000, and as high as $7k +. -
Alright, I feel like a rookie now. It was just low on fluid. New question though...First, what are my possible reasons for it being low? And, when I opened the little reservoir, it was kinda gunked up...is that a clue for something? Thanks for any tips.

Thanks for the responses and suggestions.

Asking $240 and that's without the axle shafts...apparently they were removed for spares.

Soooo, if I find a CL ad titled "Jeep Cherokee Dana 44!!! With Trac-Lock", I should probably go ahead and snag that huh? And what is necessary to do a swap, besides matching gear ratios, and spring perches? Thanks.
-
Is this a more or less bolt-on job, or is there some kind of fabricating or "customizing" that needs to be done?
-
Thanks...hopefully I can get it all

I found a complete 94 XJ, 4x4, 4.0 5 speed that is being parted out. I would at least like the transmission for my 88 MJ. What all do I need to take from the Cherokee to make that work? And, is there anything else I should grab while I'm there? Is the rear end worth taking (assuming its the 8.25)? Thanks for all help/suggestions

My Comanche has been sitting about 2 weeks now. I've started it a few times, but not actually drove it. I parked it working just fine...I thought. Got in it the other day to take it for a drive, pushed the clutch, and it sank to the floor with almost no resistance. Needless to say, couldn't get it in gear. All thoughts and comments appreciated. :help: Thanks.
-
Ahhhhhh....ok.....I kinda thought it was a little outta place (was on it when I bought it). Thanks for the heads up. Always a good day to learn something.

I've got some Comanche parts listed on CL, and I got one reply asking if I had a factory rear bumper. I hadn't intended to take anything off of my running MJ, but was curious what a fair price would be for the bumper if I did. Any suggestions?.... This is the "bumper in question". Not banged up, no rust, it doesn't need painting, and I don't even think there's a dent in it. What do yall think?

I was lookin through the DIY rightups the other day and I ran across CC member Fire4755's custom cupholder. I decided to use his method but modify it for my truck. I also have a manual with a bench seat, but I do not have the factory center console anymore. I got tired of not having a place for a cup, so..... Note the high quality custom fabrication  this is how it was before all the steps from cardboard stensil to sanded individual pieces "mock up" finished console/cup holder Its actually a lot cleaner looking finish than the overkill of a flash makes it look. I'm happy with it! :D -
Hey, thanks a lot. I'll give that a shot. Awesome step by step photos by the way.

My four wheel drive was working fine. I like to run it through 4hi and 4lo out on our property occasionally just to keep it all loose and limber. Now, its just not working. It wasn't put through anything strenuous since the last time it worked....no crazy trail or mudfest or anything. The transfer case does shift (noticeable gear reduction), the front drive shaft drives, but I'm not getting anything to the front tires. Has anybody had similar issues? All thoughts welcomed...Thanks :waving:

Alright, it seems all these symptoms were because of a failing fuel pump. Before I could change the fuel filter, the truck crapped out and wouldn't start...changed the pump, it was good to go. I also changed the filter and cleaned the tank while I was at it. Thanks for the help.

Yeah it was very simple to do, and I know my way around tools but I'm not exactly "mr. fixit". I thought the price was very reasonable too. I read your MJ build...I plan on running a snorkel also and I'm considering running some sort of exhaust that resembles a military humvee. I bought this intake because, first it was a good price, second, when I do install the snorkel, I will put this intake on my Cherokee...so it won't just be thrown away. -

I forgot to post these earlier.....I decided it was time for black flares. The paint was bad and I wanted the new look, so.... -

Soooo it turns out that Comanches run quite a bit better when they have a properly functioning fuel pump. :shake: My MJ had been running a little odd....right after start up, it would run fine, but if I proceeded to drive around town awhile, it got to the point where it would drive, but not very well. I worked off of a few pointers from the tech forum here, thanks everyone  ....right as I was going to change the fuel filter, the Jeep went *blaaah*. Thankfully I was still in my driveway. I changed the filter...nothing...but I realized when I turned the key, that I couldn't hear the pump humming...with a little help from my dad, my girlfriend (yeah, she actually crawled under the truck to lend a hand  ), and a few choice words, my Comanche is one small step closer to greatness. -
Yeah, that could definitely be an issue....all those little lines and hoses are a mess. Previous owner did some top notch "repairs"
