  1. I just finished replacing the steering column in my 89 eliminator and now have a new problem. The power steering pump is making noise like there is a bind in the system. I must have done something wrong but don't have a clue as to what. Everything worked great before just had a bad sloppy tilt column. Could I have tightened it up to tight? Is there supposed to be play in the system? Help
  2. Is the fan running when the ac is on? See my aug 24th post and the info I got. I am still not sure that the aux fan is working off the switch as my truck never gets to the 230 mark, but replacing the ac relay on pass side fixed the running hot problem for me and fixed the ac. The relays in the system are all the same and about 10 bucks at auto parts store. I bought one and started at the radiator and exchanged it out till I found the bad one, so unless you have more than one bad relay you can run a test on system with just one. I found a wiring diagram in the dyi section under aux fan does not turn on. Good luck Ron

    mj steering column

Looking for a column for my 89 eliminator with auto trans 4l, console shift. Can be tilt or non tilt as long as it doesn't have any play in it. The one in my truck will not stay tight. Needs to have wiring harness that asn't been cut or modified, and all functions working, with key. Will buy or trade set of bucket seat bases. Also need a black pass side drip moulding or a set of chrome ones. I'm in N fl thanks
  4. If you do the primer yourself you may not get any kind of warranty from the paint shop. The paints used work with their own primers best, and if you have rust you need a primer/sealer to prevent new rust. If you can shoot the primer why not shoot the top coat? A good paint store can help a lot with the job as weather, temp, humidity all impact what type of catalist, not sure thats spelled right, will be needed. Shooting paint is the easiest part of the job, the prep is where the results come from. A crappy base can not be hidden with the best paint money can buy. If you like the primer result then you will most likely like your first paint job. Just remember there is about a 24 -48 hr period after primer depending where you live and in Fl it is really a little less for best results before surface rust so small you can't see starts. I live in N Fl and only paint in the spring and fall when temps are stable as I don't use a 20,000 paint booth, just seal and vent my garage. A good diy job will cost 400-500 to do. The free labor would cost you WAY more to pay someone else to do. Your first job will cost more as you will need tools and every paint job after will be better and cheaper, and it's a blast when someone asks you to paint their car. POR is worth every penny! Good luck in your efforts and if you need any advice just send me a PM Ron
  5. Well I have half sucess, replaced the ac relay and now have cold air and fan when ac is running, cleaned up a couple of wires PO added but still no fan when ac is off. The bases to the 2 relays on dr side look rough, I will try a new relay on them first and if that doesn't work I'll replace the bases like Eagle said.
  6. I will try that and see thanks Eagle! I think the wires on the battery are bypassing the relay for the ac and I'm going to pick up a couple relays and replace them this weekend and will update.
  7. oops sorry I have a 89 4L auto ac was rebuilt 6 months ago and converted and was really blowing cold when quit. No leaks all new lines. I don't have a wiring diagram for the ac/ aux fan system and there are a bunch of relays involved and of course the therm switch on the radiator. There are 2 wires that are not stock running to the batterry terminals and then to a relay on drivers side but I can't identify the relay and why they are there. I have a meter and will have to trace every wire if I can't identify the relays that are part of the system and the wire colors. I just love people who cut wires and bypass things, makes life interesting. The therm switch would't have a cut off for the ac if engine was overheating would it?
  8. Nothing clicks and no fan, I used a jumper to the battery and had power to fan so I know the fan is ok there are just so many dang connections that could be bad in the system and it does't help that PO liked to cut wires. It had been working fine now I have to watch temp guage when I'm stopped.
  9. ac clutch and aux fan are not working. Tested fan and it is good, there is a lot of wires and relays that seem to be connected in the system so my best guess is a relay or switch has failed. Anyone had both fail at the same time? I am hoping this is a common failure and I don't have to do a complete inspection of all the components as its been 100 degree here and I don't have a shop to work in. :help:
  10. Just picked up a used toyota tocoma roll bar yesterday. It will need to be fit to the wheel wells and is about 2 inches narrow than a stock bar. I spent a yr looking for a factory bar in n Fl with no luck. It looks good sitting in the bed now and wil install this week end. Probably will need to drop gas tank and who knows what else. The height is even with the roof. When I start my build I'll post pics. Just been aquiring all the parts for a year. Still need my bucket seats which have turned in to a nightmare. Nice to have a member in Fl
  11. Know where JOT em DOWN RD IS? Welcome to the club. It's a great place to get help on comanches. Do you have one now or are you looking for your first? I'll keep my eyes open, there are several members in the area that can also help. Do you run your search specfic for comanches? It will bring up all active trucks for sale for the last month or so. The Atlanta list is so big every day it is easy to miss trucks. See you around.
  12. what part of Ga are you in? The Atlanta area has always had some good buys on craigslist. I bought my rust free 89 Pioneer 4x4 in Cummings last year. There is one in central fl on sale now for 900 which is a great buy if the guy hasn't sold it yet. Check the Gainsville Craigslist. I have a second truck in Fl that needs a tranny (aw-4) and front axle in the Tallahassee area that I will let go cheap. Been looking for a doner to use for parts just haven't found the right one. I have a line on a nice 2wd that I'm going to pick up soon. THESE THINGS ARE LIKE A DISEASE, ONE IS NEVER ENOUGH!!! :waving: good luck
  13. yep the 2.8 was available in the firebird from 84 till the up grade in 90 or 91. They had 135hp and torque was 150 or 160. they were a better engine than the base 2.8. and the Fiero had even more hp at 140 with some forged racing parts from pontiac. and were fuel injected. Still not the stump puller a 4.L is, but an easy up grade for an 86 with the shorter engine bay. They also have a ton of after market stuff for preformance. I would definetly rather have the 4.L mine just keeps on going!!!
  14. Be careful of the 2.9 chevy, I had a 07 colorado before my 89 comanche. the gas milage was around 23-24 tops and the 4 banger made it's usable hp higher so it would lug in 5th with any kind of load. To make it worse I put 16" h-3 rims and 265 tires and it REALLY lugged on the hwy a legal speeds. I was shocked by the low end of my 4L and get 20 mph with my 5 spd. To run anything bigger than a stock tire I think you would be disappointed and if you changed the gears to have power then no mpg. They are great motors I never had a bit of trouble but wished I had the 5cyl. Good luck and keep us posted.
  15. different gear ratios was one area I suspected as I have no idea as to what kind of mech PO was. I only tested the 4X4 for a 1/2 mile or so before purchase and it worked fine, but if that destroyed a jeep set up then I guess jeep isn't what I want. It is annoying the kind of responses that are coming in like I can't even put it in the right spot for 4 wheel. Guess the 80 chevy monster I built was just dumb luck. Been 4wheeling most of my 62 years just never had a JEEP. The mj is a solid running truck, lots of power, just doesn't seem to like cold weather. I have still got the first tank of gas in it as I don't dd it yet. Looking for those hard to find parts to resto in spring, then she gets the new look. Ther have been lots of recent work done by PO new front end, pressure tank, the SOA, but did he change the ratio when he redid the rear? don't know and don't have a warm shop here to tear down. Look forward to making a project page and swapping info with you guys and ladies. I am serious about a rear end swap if some one wants to do a SOA.
