Not sure if this is what you meant by "working," but here are some shots of our XJ out on the beach surf fishing. This is before restoration. For what it is worth - this is about two years later, after restoration for our son: Now we are working (slowly) on an MJ!

1987 4.0L 4x4 SWB 5-speed with bucket seats After searching the site, I've determined the color of my MJ is Grenadine Metallic Clearcoat. The paint code is BD. I'm planning to paint it back two-tone, like the picture at the bottom. If I am correct, Comanches did not come with this color combination, but I think Cherokees did - perhaps in later years. Does anyone know what the gold color is called? Thanks. Image Not Found

MJ Stock Bumper Towing Capabilities

Thanks to all for the feedback. I had searched on the topic, but this certainly helps confirm it. Looks like I'll be buying a receiver hitch. Once again, thanks to all. This is an informative and much-needed forum. -
My son and I restored a 91 XJ for his first vehicle two years ago, and he continues to drive it. We recently purchased an 87 MJ 4.0L 4WD SWB with 5-speed manual for (slow) restoration. I am trying to make some decisions on the towing capacity. As you can see from the pictures, it has a stock rear bumper that I think I can salvage. The bumper has a little rust and some sort of strange upward tilt. The boat we have is a 17-foot center console, and weighs less than 2000 pounds (including trailer), even when fully loaded with gear. Will the stock bumper handle this boat and trailer? Would a Fey bumper have more towing capacity? Should I invest in a receiver hitch (if I can find one)? Thanks for any information. Image Not Found

87 Comanche 4.0L Compression Test

We only paid $500 for the MJ, and I knew there might be problems with the engine. I mainly was after the body, as it was straight with no rust. A solid engine would have just been gravy. Doesn't look like we got the solid engine. However, we also got the 4.0L, 4WD, SWB, and 5-speed manual. Good luck with your '90. -
My son and I have just started on a 1987 Comanche. Had the fuel pump and all fuel injectors professionally replaced, and just completed a compression test. Here's what we came up with: 1 - 65 psi 2 - 90 psi 3 - 90 psi 4 - 60 psi 5 - 90 psi 6 - 80 psi Although the engine only shows 97K, it was not well-maintained by the previous owner. We changed the oil immediately upon purchase, and the oil was the blackest I've ever seen. It even felt sticky. No telling when the last oil change took place. Any opinions on what the readings above are telling us? Thanks.

Fuel Pump O-Ring Pulling Air?

Thanks for all of the feedback. We've had the MJ a week now, and we've had a little time to spend with it. What we have found is that it is almost impossible to crank - runs the battery down and we have to jump it before it will finally fire up. Once it is running, you can restart it with no problem. I've had it sit as long as two hours and it still starts up fairly well. However, if it is left overnight, it is again almost impossible to crank. In addition, most if not all of the fuel injectors are leaking a little. Could the fuel injectors be the problem? Could they be allowing the fuel rail to lose fuel pressure, and everything has to prime after sitting for a long time? I've checked the spark plugs, and they are clean and gapped correctly. I'm thinking if it were the CPS, it would continue to be difficult to crank after we get it started the first time. As always, thanks for any ideas. -

The previous owner told us this problem started after he installed a new fuel pump at the gas tank. He said the gasket or o-ring did not seal correctly, and it is pulling air. He said that it is an easy fix - there is a bracket that spins around to release the fuel pump, and then the o-ring is simply replaced. Does anyone have experience with this? I searched on the forum, but could not find anything specific. Thanks in advance for any information.
