I will try to grab a picture of it during the week. It is currently still in my truck. I am planning on swapping in an SYE’d 231 and haven’t gotten around to it, but I will one of the nights this week.

I have a 23 spline 231 from a 2001 XJ in Berwick, ME if you are coming this far into New England. $150. It had 120k on it.

Thanks, I will update some wiring progress pics this weekend when I finish up the chassis side. Anyone have any any suggestions on 3-4” leaf springs for the rear? I was looking at Rusty’s for the cost, but would be willing to do a bastard pack of some sort.

This is the only side pic I have the front 60 getting stuffed under the front end. Since that picture, the control arms and wheels/tires are bolted up. I am running 3” OME coils up front and still trying to decide on what 3-4” lift rear springs to run.

Not much to report since I am 3,000 miles away in sunny San Diego for the month of January. I did bring the 5.0 wiring harness out with me to plug away at it when I have time. I hate wiring, but this is forcing me into learning a little about it. I am following some awesome videos on chopping the harness that make it very easy, so we will see how it turns out. Starting with the body side of the harness (the engine harness is in the box)...

I got the control arm mounts on the axle tacked I place today. It is back on the ground on all fours again. Next up will be to work on the motor and tranny mounts. I will grab a picture in the morning, but it is going to be tight down there, although, I did notice I have the motor sitting about 4” lower than where it will probably end up.

I rolled the 60 under the front to start lining it up for the control arm mounts. It pretty much took up all of the space and will make mounting the motor, exhaust, and anything else under there a challenge.

Yeah, we bought this house about 2.5 years and unfortunately every time I “buckle” down and get serious about organizing it, I end up tearing into a project. I have done a frame swap on my wife’s ‘98 TJ, and torn down 3 XJs, and now started into the MJ. After this project, I am planning on spending the summer setting it up the garage the way I should have done it originally. I am planning on an LS swap into my ‘04 Unlimited next winter. From left to right, the wife’s 98 TJ, my 88 MJ, and my 04 TJU.

Got a little done today on the truck. Got the front end out, and most importantly, got some cleaning/reorganization done in the garage.

I have a 4”x4” block of wood between the spring plate and bump stop to give me the 3-4” of lift I am after, while keeping it SUA. I think that height is about perfect. I am thinking about adding TJ flares to give the tires some room to move around.

I will grab some more pictures of it tomorrow, but this is how it sits right now. I am pulling the front axle out and suspension tomorrow to make room for the 60, and then will start working on positioning the motor and fabbing the mounts up.

i got the 60 bolted under the rear and need to open the ID of my H2 rims up a little bit so they will fit over the hubs. Once I get that done tomorrow, I will grab some pictures. With a full width 60 in the rear, about 66” WMS, it looks like the outside of the tires will be around an inch or two of stock width. I need to see how the front 60 looks for width before I decide to change my wheels for something with less backspacing.

LOL, so I keep forgetting about this thread. I have pulled the truck off the road for the weather, and have stripped it right down, minus leaving the bed on for now. I have swapped over to the +’97 interior, including doors and the nose. I have to do a little sheet metal work on the floors before I can finalize the interior and put the new carpet in it. I have the Clayton xmember installed for the 3 link. I just pulled the dana 35 from the rear and will be dropping the dana 60 in the rear on Wednesday. I am planning on keeping it SUA for now, and will be looking to lift it 2-3” over stock to clear some 35s. The front end will be pulled for a kingpin dana 60. I know the axles are over kill for 35s, but I have them, so I may as well use them. Oh, and by the way, the 5.0 is sitting in the engine compartment now. It is staying there. I will be fabbing up new motor mounts soon and then I can shift over to merging the wiring harness from the donor Mercury Mountaineer and 99 XJ. I hate wiring and am forcing myself to learn on this project.

Good idea with the paint stick, I will give that a try during my next attempt at a fit up. -
‘97 and up dash swap questions..
Papa ken replied to Papa ken's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I will try taking some of the screw in studs out to see which holes are off. I am planning on patching any sheet metal holes when I yank the motor out. Thanks, Ken -
Ok, I have a ‘99 XJ that I a man using as a donor for my ‘88 MJ. I have the entire interior ripped out of the MJ and I am starting to fit up the XJ interior. My first question that I have is I am having a hard time fitting up the new hvac box. I haven’t seen anything on people having difficulty when bolting this up. The 5 bolt holes look to be the same pattern and I did a card board trace of the heater core and ac line area (I saw somewhere that this was different) and all the blower motor, line opening and top couple of bolts were all the same. What am I missing. Thanks, Ken

Swapping 1996 HO into 88 Renix MJ
Papa ken replied to Papa ken's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, I will be swapping everything in the dash over, including the gauge cluster and even the steering column. My interior wiring was hacked by mice at some point and it has been cobbled together. -
I purchased a '96 XJ to swap over the 4.0 HO to my MJ. I know the '96 is kind of a bastard year due to the start of OBDII, but I got it cheap and I knew the history on it. I am planning on swappping everything from the motor, tranny, tease, alll the wiring, and the dash because I want to upgrade to AC while I am at it. My question on the swap is fuel pump related. It looks like the pump on the '96 mounts the same way as the one in my '88, so can I just buy a replacement '96 and use that to get the gas gage to work? Or, will a HO pump/sending unit from a 91-92? When I first bought the MJ, I had to swap out the tank so I used a new tank without a slosh pan in it. Not sure if it is pertinent or not, but figured I would add it for a little back ground. I can't remember what fuel pump assembly I ended up using, other than I got it at O'Reilly's and they had it in stock. In short, I am just curious what fuel pump I need to make my gas gage work and more importantly the motor work. Thanks, Ken

I kind of forgot about this post. So, I don't have a lot of progress to show on this, but I have changed up my plans of swapping in the 5.0 I have. That is going to be saved for a Scrambler that I just picked up to restore over the winter. I acquired my neighbors '96 XJ that I am planning on swapping the HO, AW4, and 231 out of to give this a little more power and to finish the 4x4 conversion. I will be swapping the dash over along with most of the wiring to get it ac in it as well. For the fuel pump, can I just swap in the fuel pump/sender over to the MJ tank since I am swapping over the newer gage cluster as well? It looks like it is very similar. When I swapped my tank this past fall, I opted for one without the baffle pan in it. This weekend I will be swapping over the master cylinder to upgrade the brakes on it.

Military Wrapped Springs With Lift, Group Buy
Papa ken replied to Biotex's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I believe all of the group buy spots have already been filled sir. But they are still available for 200 a spring! Alright, I wasn't sure. The $200 per side is still a smoking deal compared to the other options out there, and all I am looking for is a ~3" lift. Thanks. -

I will be ready to buy a set of these in about one month. -
I have a1988 short bed comanche that is currently 2 wheel drive. My next door neighbor has a 1996 jeep cherokee that he is practically giving me and I have a few questions that I am hoping you guys can help me with. 1) I want to swap the power train over from the XJ, 4.0, aw4, and the 231. I plan on swapping all of the wiring over, I am thinking this should just be a matter of removing old wiring and replacing with the not as old wiring. Am I thinking right? 2) I want to take advantage of the ac and add it to my Comanche. Can I just swap the parts needed or is easier to swap the entire dash assembly? 3) I know '96 is a bastard year for the switch to obd2, but how do I check if it is obd2 or a late obd1? 4) What else do I need to worry about? I know I need to swap over the fuel pump and radiator over to a HO stuff, but what else? The XJ is running and driving, so I have a complete donor available. Thanks, Ken

Please Help - outer stub shaft and wheel bearing assembly
Papa ken replied to NorthWoods's topic in Wanted
Not sure where in maine you are, but I have a complete 2001 low pinion axle out of an XJ for sale for $100 in Berwick, ME. I am looking for some trades if you are interested, like a set of aftermarket 15" wheels with 3.75" or 4" backspacing, pre-95 4wd aw4 and 231 tcase so I can finally finish my 4wd conversion. I can toss some cash in if needed. Ken -
I apologize for asking as I know this has been asked before, but I have been searching for awhile on here and have found some information, but am looking for a definitive path for my case. I have a 1988 MJ that is currently 2wd. It is the renix 4.0 and aw4. I just got done hacking up a 2001 XJ and kept the aw4 and 231 and all the wiring/dash stuff. I know the aw4 will swap in, but I am trying to figure out exactly what I need to do to make it work electrically. Like I said, I have everything available to me from the 2001 XJ to make the swap, I am just not electrically inclined and need to have my hand held. I appreciate any help as I am hoping to make my truck a 4x4 next week! Ken
