Overheating on the highway
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I am running the original cat, is there a way to find out if it is clogged? It seems to have plenty of power (could be the 4.10 gears :D ) I'm concerned that after less than a month the new coolant is now brown instead of green. If the coolant channels in the engine are corroded up how do you fix this? -
My 89 4.0 renix MJ is overheating on the highway but stays cool at low speeds. I'm out of ideas... In the past few months I have replaced the radiator, water pump, thermostat and housing, heater valve, all hoses, gauge temp sensor, coolant, and added a factory electric fan. Pretty much everything is new except for the heater core and the engine. I flushed the heater core very well during the conversion but I noticed my coolant looks very rusty after about 1 month of use. I am running a bottle of coolant flush through the system right now, what else should I look at? I know its not the gauge because it is getting hot enough to boil over. What would cause it to overheat just cruising on the highway but not low speed crawling in 100 degree temps? Nothing is blocking the front of the radiator either.

I too have read the horror stories about their service/products, but I have bough from them 3 times over the years and have only have good experiences.

I finally got my 8.8 cleaned up, welded, painted and swapped in only to find out one of my E brake cables going to the axle is seized up and the other isn't much better (explains why the brake didn't work well before). Has anyone used the explorer cables along with the axle? It looks like you could use 2 of the right side cables and they would be close to the same length.

Where can I get one of these?
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thanks for the guidance, I should have a new hardware kit on the way Monday. I have no idea how long the track bar has been on the Jeep but the heim joint is still nice and tight. The bolt was loose when I bought the truck and the threads are mangled from it wobbling around. I'm sure the extreme duty version is beefier since it is a double sheer set up, but I'll take my chances with the current style. -
I've had this truck for about 3 months now and figured it is time to share a few pictures of it since I have learned a lot from this site. It had a blown slave cylinder and had been neglected for the past few years. At some point, someone spent some money on it though with the ARB bumper, RE front lift, SOA and 33" swampers. I have spent the past few months replacing everything in the interior except the dash (some day). It only had a bench seat, door danels and a dash when I got it. Luckily I found a badly wrecked MJ at the JY near me and I stripped the entire interior except for the dash and swapped it over. This is what the interior looked like after a LOT of cleaning This is how is looks today, the exterior looks pretty ugly and rough but it's just a toy, not a daily driver and I plan to wheel it a lot so I'm not too concerned about that. I still need to figure out why it is overheating and get it to pass inspection. I already replaced the leaky radiator and converted it to an open cooling system. It runs great other than the 3.08 gears and 33" swampers. Next on the mod list are some 4.10 axles (Ford 8.8 and newer D30 from a 4cyl XJ), about 2" more lift, and 35's

I need to replace the heim joint and bolt with spacers on the end of my track bar. Any one know where I can get a new set up like this?

I am beginning my axle hunt for 4.10 gears in a front HP D30 and a rear Ford 8.8. The rear axle I have figured out but I'm not sure on the front. Should I be looking for a 4cyl auto XJ or MJ? The JY I was at yesterday had a 4cyl 5spd XJ and it had 3.73 gears. Am I correct in thinking only the MJ and XJ had the HP D30?

I also recently ordered the $65 ebay radiator. It was an exact fit and seems to be made at least as well as the OEM one it replaced.

Broken temperature gauge needle
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm in DFW, TX. Is it the same style cluster that I posted? I'd be glad to pay shipping for it if it's the same. -
I discovered that my temp gauge was off about 20 degrees and in the process of seeing if I could adjust the needle, I broke it off :headpop: Looks like I will have to replace the gauges again, my question is can I take the temp gauge out of a non renix cluster and have it work? I had a hard time finding the cluster I currently have. Anyone have a busted cluster laying around I can have the temp gauge out of? My cluster looks like this but it is the older Renix version

Will a 97+ XJ radiator bolt right in my 89 Mj?
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
How long have you had that radiator and would you buy from them again? I looked at the exact one, but the price seemed too good to be true. The JY by my house quoted me $75 for just the radiator out of a newer XJ :???: -
Will a 97+ XJ radiator bolt right in my 89 Mj?
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Are all MJ's prewired for the electrical fan from the factory? I didn't see any empty plugs near the radiator that might be used for the fan. My radiator only has the hose inlet and outlets and a petcock that I can see so I assumed that it doesn't have a coolant temp sensor for the fan. Thanks for the help. -
Will a 97+ XJ radiator bolt right in my 89 Mj?
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I read that link and it is very helpful, but I didn't see anything about the 97+ XJ one fitting. jpnjim - Thanks, that is good to hear. There isn't a tranny cooler built into the automatic version is there? My automatic liberty radiator has that and I'm not sure how I would plug the holes if it does since I wouldn't need them. -
I need a new radiator and also want to convert to an open system to hopefully help with my overheating issues. From what I have read, a newer XJ radiator is a easy swap as long as I get the hoses and overflow tank. The Junk Yard near me has a very low mileage automatic 2000 XJ that I can get the parts off of. Is there anything else I need to be prepared for?

Where can I find a vacuum line diagram?
bighause replied to bighause's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
That is perfect, thanks for the help. It looks like the lines are hooked up properly. The EGR tube isn't opening like it should. It only opens under acceleration if I bypass the EGR solenoid, does that mean that the solenoid is bad? -
Where can I find a vacuum line diagram?
bighause posted a topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My truck failed an emissions test the other day because of high Nox so I am looking into the EGR system. I replaced the vac hoses and tested the EGR valve by applying vacuum directly to it and it moves properly. Were can I find a good diagram for the vac lines to verify if mine are right? Is there anything else I should be checking that could cause high Nox? The Jeep was overheating during the test, can that cause high Nox? I'm replacing the radiator next week since it recently started leaking slightly and hopefully that will fix the heat issue. -
My MJ has 3.08 gears which are less than perfect with 33's so I am looking into swapping axles with 4.10's. The dana 30 is pretty easy to find with 4.10's but I'm not sure about what to do for the rear. What are the disadvantages to a 8.8? I remember reading it was narrower than the stock axle, how much though? I like the idea of disk brakes on the newer ones and a posi since I currently have open diffs F and R. My truck is SOA so I'll have to do some welding either way. It seems like the 2 common swaps are the 8.8 or a D44, am I missing any easy swap options?

I used black RTV sealant for mine, but then again my truck is a piece with a crappy paint job. The badge is not coming off and you can't tell it isn't factory.
