  1. That looks like the Bendix 9 hydro-boosted ABS setup I had in my 91 XJ Limited... And yeah, the parts aren't made anymore and it IS failure prone in a bad way... lose that hydro-boost pump and lose your brakes. If any of those components work you could probably make some $$$ selling it on ebay. When mine went I so desparately didn't want to retrofit a standard vacuum setup onto mine, so I went looking for parts. Heartbreaking. I ended up pulling a standard vacuum setup off a 90 and pulling that ABS mess out. It's a nightmare.
  2. Yes the D35 sucks, and the c-clip ones even more so. Countless are the stories about them breaking. I personally saw a guy with a c-clip D35, break the clip and the axlestarted rotating out of the axle tube as he drove. Probably bummed his weekend out pretty good. BUT If you have one, drive it with moderation in mind. I had a D35c on my old XJ and I wheeled it pretty good once or twice... bear in mind I was just running 31*10.5s. Don't get too frisky.
  3. I have a rear bumper (Pro Comp) similar to the one you got there and the fellows are right... The stock mounts WILL let you down in a big way, but t-i-t-s on making it yourself. As for the paint... Not my first choice, but the purple isn't all the problem. I don't like white cars; feels like driving a service vehicle. I'm with the folks that say "if you like it right on." And as far as folks being critical of your 'vanity' in wanting it to stand out? I don't think there is anybody here (regardless of paint scheme) that doesn't appriciate a compliment on their ride. Right? I think we all love cars if this is how we spend our time and more to the point... Jeeps... and more to the point... Comanches. God knows I scope every Jeep that goes by, even bone stock ones. Yeah, the color ain't conventional, but if you dig it? Right on. P.S. Down with chrome (my beef :) )
  4. I usually don't agree with dudes that flip off the general public. :D Unless it's over fruity beer. But I really must agree. Fruity beer??? If god wanted beer to be sweet and fruity he would have put it in your kid's lunch box. Now if I could get a beer with rare steak or salted peanuts? That would be two birds with one stone. Wait a minute... I dig hard cider. BUT again that's "Hard Cider" not Beer. Just an opinion, don't want to make any enemies especially ones that might push fruity beer on me.
  5. I would say yes, if the MJ is in good shape... I was told that in order to flat tow my 80 CJ5 (w/Dana 300) I should remove the rear driveline of the CJ5. This was because of the DANA 300 design and that flat towing (even in neutral) could waste the t-case. In any case t-case should be in neutral, but you probably know that... Now I'll let others that know more than I give you the solid word. :D Jealous of that Flatfender bro... But welcome to MJ land. I've had mine about a month and I freaking love it... Just as soon as I get my CJ rust-proofed (good luck huh?) and registered I will start making my MJ the baby. Jeep and truck? Some sort of little dream that's been under my nose all this time. Sorry it took so long to find it.
  6. Cool, I'll give it all a shot this weekend. Thanks for the good words
  7. The other day, while I was braking to come off the freeway, my steering stiffened up momentarily. It was while braking and only whilst turning the wheel very little this way and that. Here is why I'm after advice... I just had TeraFlex put on 4 new ball joints and a couple of tie-rob ends (Hey I needed them for inspection, and I needed a plate to park it at my place), but the Power Steering pump sounds a little bad. My MJ is a 89 4.0L, manual. Anyone have any pointers, hear-say, or other general advice?
  8. XJ for an MJ is no deal to me... I had an XJ because I wanted an MJ or CJ and wife said, "It's got to have four doors whatever it is." We divorced (not entirley over jeeps ;) ) now I have a MJ and a CJ5... and a TJ rubicon I need to sell. Life is lonely, but life is good. Two Jeeps you love and a dog has a strange way of making up the difference.
  9. Solved... DANA 300 t-case & SR4 Tranny. I'm not sure if the SR4s were only mated up with the GM 151 4-bangers, BUT If reverse is up and to the left then it's an SR4, if it's down and to the right it's a t-176/177. For posterity and the forum archives. (Just in case any one ends up looking for a 4-banger CJ5 or has one given to them. )
  10. Anybody know what t-case a 1980n CJ5 had? If it makes any difference it has the GM 151.
  11. Thanks Taz. It ain't really my driving that scares me, it's all the other yay-hoos on cell phones, screaming kids in the car, or folk that are just plain a-holes that put me uptight. I think I'll try the flat tow method if I can finagle this.
  12. Next stupid question... You think I could flat tow this CJ with my wrangler? Dude does have seat belts or doors on it, that along with the fact there is no power steering and brakes makes this thing a "dance with the devil" to drive on the freeway from Provo Utah to Salt Lake. ;) I've heard that it isn't wise to trailer more than 2K lbs, with a short wheelbase Jeep, but my MJ's rear bumper is bent down.?
  13. Well on the rust side... There is a rust hole at the base of the Driver-side factory roll bar. Other than that only very light surface stuff (probably come off with CLR. The whole tub is rhino-lined. It's only the t-case that I'm a little leary of. I tried twice to shift, before he showed me to coast it a little. By the way, what's a "DD?"
  14. I was thinking about picking up a 1980 CJ5 on the cheap from a Marine that is shipping out, but I have a couple of questions I haven't been able to address anywhere and he just got his orders for this Monday... He is selling a 1980 CJ5 4-banger, manual, paint shot like all "get out", but very limited rust. For a 4-banger it has got some guts and drives quite well for a Jeep with no power-steering or power-brakes. With all the parts he's throwing in (2 tops, new guages, etc...) $1600-1700 seems like a great deal. However, when shift the t-case into or out of 2H, 4L, or 4H the Jeep needed to coast a little. Is this normal? He said it had been that way since he bought it and had never had any problems, but "that you had to coast it a little." I know my TJs and MJ seem to go in a little easier when you are moving 2-5 mph. What do you guys think? Being that I am selling my 04 Rubicon, and that I want to start working on my MJ, having an old CJ5 to get to work when the MJ is torn up might be cool. :D TIA
  15. Stu's offroad website hit most of the points. CB (and antennas in general) have a lot of BS surrounding. This dude knows a great deal. http://www.stu-offroad.com/misc.asp
  16. I know when I had my XJ w/ the AW4 auto tranny folks said ALWAYS carry a crankshaft position sensor because they were know to go out and leave you stranded on the trail. So now I have my MJ w/ the Renix 4.0L and the AX-15 manual (I believe)... What sensors should a long suffering Jeep guy like myself for my rig? TIA You guys rock P.S. How do you tell if it's the AX-15? The dude I bought it from said it was an "AX... sumthin." (Not exactly confidence inspiring)
  17. IS there a MSD coil/wireset for the Renix system in my 89 MJ? I don't seem to be able to google any info (not the first time when dealing with the MJ). Also JC Whitney has some sort of 60000 volt coil, any thoughts or opinions? http://www.jcwhitney.com/HIGH-PERFORMAN ... _10101.jcw TIA
  18. @hornbrod Yeah, my fantasy world is a very cool place to be. ;) By the way, I dig your Hemingway qoute. How do you like mine?
  19. Arg, chrome pushers... Like that movie "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka" where dude comes back from the army only to find his little bro died of "Gold Chains" and assembles a crack team to bust the gold chain cartel. Down with chrome... unless (as posted before) it also has fins. :brows:
  20. Thanks all... I guess I have some thinking to do as far as lift height goes. I would guess my lift is a 2" based on all your input. Thing is I would figure most two inch lifts to be spacers/shackles. My MJ has no spacers in front and no SOA in the back (I'm guessing a longer shackle). I guess if I go over 3" I will do a SYE and longer shaft, BUT... My old XJ had a Rusty's 3" and once it was all straightened out (don't ask) it maintained great street driving characteristics, but my buddies TJ with a 4.5" did not... One reason I left my Rubicon stock. I guess the real question is, at what point does a lift start screwing with daily-drivability?
  21. As soon as I get some sort of web hosting, I'll post some up... I too figured Rancho or Skyjacker... Just wasn't sure about stock heights vs. the 31s it has on there.
  22. I just bought a 89 Comanche and I am wondering what height of lift is on it? What is stock from hub to top of the fender? I have heard that stock MJs can handle 31s? This is the size tire I have. But I don't think Jeep ever put red coils on the front or red shock boots. ;) I also checked this thread... http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=9777 In reguards to a SYE and it would seem I could play around upto 5" without an SYE? Any more comments on this issue? Off the top of anyone's head, what tire size can be run stock? w/ 2" lift? w/ 3" lift? with 4.5" Keep in mind I am looking for marginally better offroad performance without sacrificing too much full economy or highway handling. Thanks folks
  23. Howdy folks. I am new here. I just bought an MJ... 89, 4.0L, Manual, SWB, DANA 30 up front and DANA 44 in back. It has some sort of lift... 2" (I think) as it is running 31*10.5 tires. I looking into getting the rust repaired and gettin'er painted. I look forward to getting to know you folks better and contributing to the forums in the future. This site has already been such a great resource for info for somebody just getting into the Comanche thing. Now onto the stock replacment parts thing... I hate chrome. Nothing against those that do, but my father was killed by chrome ( :brows: ). I am looking to get rid of the chrome windshield trim and gutters and the like in favor of black... Also things like new weather stripping and mirrors, etc... Any leads? I have a few other things to say, but I'll save them for the "tech" or classifieds. Thanks
  24. Just bought a Comanche and I live in Salt Lake.
