Rattle Can Paint Job, what grit do I sand?

Recommended Posts

This depends on the condition of the paint, and the kind of spray paint you are using. I personally paint my rigs with rustoleom flat black and have never sanded it. Paint looked good and has held up well. I would sand as little as possible, cause the original paint still offers rust protection. If I had to sand.. it would be to only "smooth" out were the paint is peeling or clearcoat is bubbled. I would use a fine grit like 280 or 320

If you have a smooth surface and just need to create a better place for the new paint to stick, I would go with something even finer like 800 - 1000 grit. The 280 - 320 range would be good for any rough spots in the old clear as pingpong said.

You want to leave enough "tooth" for the new paint to grab onto. If I were doing it, I'd probably go to 400 grit. If I were advising someone else, I'd probably suggest a final sanding at 800 grit.
