low fuel light and speedometer

Recommended Posts

in my 86 my dash lights have been acting up so i decided to clean them and replace them all. but when i got back there i found that i had no low fuel light. so i moved one of the backlighting lights that light the gauges to the low fuel spot and it would not go out. i just filled up before i did all this so i know its not because i am out or low. so i have a few questions. 1: where can i get the gray plastic clip part that the bulb goes into that holds it into the dash? 2: what would cause it to not go out? also my speedometer is acting up. it bounces alot now and takes forever to slow down when i come to a stop. it is also about 5mph fast now. so i was wondering how i tighten it back up since it is a mechanical one. thx alot.

I don't have a clue about the low fuel warning. The problem is probably in the sending unit, which is in the tank. Sounds like the previous owner "solved" the problem by removing the bulb and socket.

The speedo problem is probably a dry cable. With the gauge cluster out, you should be able to pull the cable up out of the sleeve and lube it with something. If you have a can of LubriPlate, that's what I would suggest. Since you probably don't have LubriPlate, just use white spray grease from the parts house.

"socket" that was the word i was looking for. . and i will have to try that on the speedo.

QUOTE: 1: where can I get the gray plastic clip part that the bulb goes into that holds it into the dash?

When I did my gage upgrade I went to the parts store and asked for a bunch of lights for the dash. They supplied me with them already IN THOSE GRAY SOCKETS!!

You will need two sizes to change out all lights a sockets.

WAGNER LIGHTING PRODUCTS

# PC194 (bigger ones) and #PC74 (the itty bitty ones)

Hope this helps,

well i just went to walmart and got the bulbs. i already replaced all of them but the low fuel one since i did not have the socket clip. but man those bulbs are hard to replace. so the parts store should have the sockets, i will have to get one.

My speedo ounced around after I took the guage cluster out. fixed it by taking the cluster out and pulling more of the speedo cable up out of the dash. Apparently wen I put it back together the first time I had pushed the cable down a bit and it wasn't fully engaging or something to that effect. Anyway, I'd pull it up a bit and lube it.

Look at the routing of the speedo cable. If there are any sharp bends, it can cause the cable to "whip." If it seems to be pulled tight around any corners or bends, try to move it one way or the other to take up slack in one place and create a smoother radius at the bend.
