What seats fit in the MJ?

Recommended Posts

I currently have a bench seat in my 4x4 86 MJ. Sunday we purchased a 92' XJ center console off Ebay. Obviously, now we have to remove the bench and install some bucket seats. The only thing is that we are both fairly picky and want black leather ones to match the current interior. So far the junkyards had nothing worth our time to mess with. Please help.

1) What other Jeep seats will fit in the MJ along with a full center console?

2) Has anyone thought about using Liberty seats?

3) If we buy racing seats or other buckets without brackets, where can the brackets be purchased or are we required to use the bench bracket or an XJ straight bracket?

Dodge Dakota buckets will work with some creative mounting. Compared to the bench it has about 2" more leg room.

Some have a center console that just unboltsand others have a floor console. They offer more support and comfort. They tilt forward too.

'98 Dakota bucket seats with the console that unbolts.

I just put 97 XJ buckets and center console in my 86 MJ. I left the 97 brackets on and just drilled new holes in the floor and got some huge grade 8 bolts.. 1 bolt hole lined up, had to drill 3 on each side. Works for me.

And they are 2-door buckets, so they tilt forward, which is sweet.

Anything not "made for it" is going to require custom fab work to install ;) . I have seen a lot of different seats used in these trucks...you just need the ability and facility to do it  .

Haha i Have a Grinder, Welder, Drill, Bolts haha I bet you it could work

Worked for my on saturday. I tried retro-fitting the 97 XJ buckets onto the MJ bench seat brackets but it was not happening without a ton of work. The newer XJ brackets are way too wide. So i just put the seat in the MJ as is with XJ brackets on it, and drilled new holes. Pretty easy.

One suggestion,

Stay away from "full sized" vehicles in your search. Look at vehicles with similar widths to out Comanches. Some of the sporty rice rockets have some nice supportive seats!!

Bolt some wide steel across the factory MJ bases. The seat s them selves will give the front to rear support. more can be added if you feel it necessary. This way you just drill that steel to the hole orientation from the new seats and bolt'em up!!

Rice Rockets, good idea. Looks like another trip to junkyard. Any particular vehicles come to mind?

So far as the MJ base, it sounds like we are retrofitting the existing bench riser/mounting plate after removing it from the bench. Correct?

If so I like the idea, it eliminates looking for XJ straight brackets or MJ bucket brackets. It also would allow us to even purchase some racing seats if we go that direction.

I'm 6'4 But i still like to Look over my hood

When I wheel I don't like hitting my head when I look out the window to check my line. JeepcoMJ checked it out and liked it and he's about 6' at the most.

I'm going to be using 2dr XJ doors(9" longer) so I won't have to lean forward either. :brows:

Depends on what you like.. Personally, I'd look for anything "sporty". Toyota Supra, 260, 280, 300, ZX etc.
