Dome lights dont turn off

Recommended Posts

Recently my dome lights stopped turning off, I already replaced the door switches, and when I close the door they dim but the don't shut off. For a temp fix I pulled the fuse, but i would really like to fix this. I'm thinking that maybe the headlight/dimmer switch is out. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

I am guessing thats Its one of two things, those same door switches, or the light switch in the dash.

If you do the dash switch you cannot easily remove with out taking the "stem" out of the switch. For this you must be double jointed or have small hands. There is a little button on the top of the switch behind the dash that will allow you to pull the "stem completely out. Facilitating the part of the switch that's behind the dash to come out.

That button is spose to be on the bottom of the switch, and theres a hole going straight up to it through the lower dash. (if you lay in the floorboard you'd be able to see it if you looked up where the switch is. The switch has a slot that fits only one way into the dash making the button face the floor.. Trick I've found it releasing the stem is to pull stem out with a little pressure , push the button, push back and forth gently and it will release and slide right out..

Then take a large flat head and remove the collar that holds the switch, with same flathead pry the connector off and don't forget the ground that grounds the shell of the switch(on the back of the switch) The dimmer looks like a spring behind a ceramic wheel, clean it up and make sure the stationary

contact isn't broken..

Those switches must be pretty damn tough because my '78 CJ had a switch just like it..

yes, he did.

if you put aftermarket lights in there and are now having problems...I'd say you picked the wrong power supply to run it through. that's the symptom you have :D

there are 2 power supplies per side. you want the one that only lights up when the doors are open ;) :brows:

when i first put the lights in they functioned normally, on with door open, off when closed, after a while they would turn on randomly and i would just have to slam the door and they would turn off. after a while the would turn on more often, and i would come outside and they were on.

My turn: Since the power goes to the lights all the time, (fuse providing) the lights turn on by grounding the other side. The dim light and intermittent symptoms suggest that it could be something like a pinched wire under the floor mat, rocker trim, or wherever your wire is ran. It might even be some weak short right near or on the light itself.
