What transmission would a 95 Dakota with the 318 and an auto have? I've tried googling it, but searching the internet is the worst way to get info nowadays.

Is it an AW4?

There were two choices in 96. The 42RE or 46RE. I am not sure if you needed a tow package for the 46RE. They did not use the AW4 in the Dakota.

With the 5.2L (318) engine...it should be a 46RE. If you have a VIN number on it, post or PM me the last 9 digits and I will tell you what it has.

I think they were either 42RH's or 46 RH's. One is based on a TF904 the other is based on a TF727. I have seen both behind the 5.2 in Dakota's. I believe 96 was the year they change to the RE version of those transmisions. The RH is hydraulic controlled for shifting and the RE is eletronicly controlled.
