I was working & living in the UK, so I had an opportunity to buy a 1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ Orvis.  The “Orvis” was meant to compete with Range Rover.  It’s too bad, the Orvis XJ was never sold in North America, to compete with the “Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer” or the “L.L. Bean Subaru Outback”.

Very cool! I never knew there were Orvis XJs, I only knew about the ZJs. Is it 4.0 powered? What’s up with the ZJ 5.9 hood vents?

4.0 powered got the AW4 slush box.  2.5td got the 5spd manual transmission.  I thought production years were from 1999-2001, but I was corrected that the 1998 model year was the first year of the Orvis XJ.

Somewhere I read, the XJ’s were taken off the boat & sent to an outfit / organization to get refitted, to be made into the “Orvis".  Best I can tell (I think), they started out as a Classic or Limited for export, due to the color coded bumpers & door moldings, the hood liner, and I want to say the carpet is thicker / more plush, but I’m not sure.  I’ve never had this Orvis XJ, next to another XJ, where I could really compare.

Real wood trim veneer was used.

The ZJ 5.9 hood vents are non-functional on the Orvis XJ’s.  Just stick on’s…

My 1999 MJ project I’m working on, I plan to put as much of an Orvis XJ interior into it, as I can.  Lack of a better term, I think it will be a "yuppie” truck / mall crawler / daily driver, when I’m done.
