Internal vs External Slave Cylinder ID

Recommended Posts

Hi all, this is my first post in this forum so apologies if this topic should be posted elsewhere. But I'm hoping for some help ID'ing the correct slave cylinder replacement part. I'm a long time Wrangler owner and brand new Comanche owner. Just brought home a '86 longbed 2.8l 5-speed. It currently isn't driving due to a bad clutch. Previous owner said the pedal went soft all of a sudden and it started to leak fluid, which sounds like a bad slave cylinder to me. My plan is to pull the transmission and replace the clutch, master, and slave together since they've all seen better days.

I ordered all the parts I needed, however I'm wondering if I got the wrong part number for the slave as this looks like an external slave (pic attached below). I ordered Centric's 138.63002. The internal slave cylinders I've seen on YJ AX5s have a much different design. Would love any help IDing this / confirming I get the correct part. Thanks!

Looks like an external to me.

Add to your list a new clutch line. (also should check that isnt the issue to begin with, would be a lot less of a headache if that is the case)

84-86 2.8L V6 and 2.5Ls have external slaves. Which is what you have. That set up is superior vs the internal. 87-90 are internal and 91-01 are external.

Oh and I wouldn’t be replacing parts due to age. These days the older genuine parts are much better than new ones. See if you can rebuild the master and slave. I remember on my external slave, the seal got too wet(yeah i dont know) and let fluid pass. So I replaced the seal with a new one and all is good and leak free.

New clutch line is a great callout, I'll plan to inspect and replace that while I'm at it. Thanks!

Ahhhh that makes a ton of sense. I assumed like the early 4.0 / Ax-15s that they had internal. This is great news, makes my life easier haha!

Totally agree, if I can salvage the original parts I definitely will.

Yup. Only 87-90 are the internal years 84-86 make a great upgrade direct swap for later 2.5L's and the HO years are perfect swap for both engines. Though Ive never seen anyone swap an HO bell house to an earlier 2.5L.
