Box Under Center of Dash: What's it For?

What the heck is this thing? I took it out while doing some work, and I do plan to put it back in, but from what I can tell the only thing it does is direct air flow from a vent flap... and I'm hyperfixated on it because it's a weird design. Maybe it is intended to catch debris coming in from the outside? Also, if something like a hose is supposed to be hooked up to this, I don't think it has been for a long time.

I just a bottom vent to direct air. On models with a center console, a different box would be there that gets connected to a plastic tube that’s guided under the console to blow air to the passengers.
