ScottJ Posted January 3, 2008 Share Posted January 3, 2008 Hey guys, I'm not the best mechanic so please bear with me. I've got an '86 longbed 4x2 with the 2.8L automatic. It's my daily driver. This may be related to my problem: The old 2bbl rochester gave up and instead of rebuilding the crappy solenoid filled carb I bought the Edelbrock manifold and 390cfm Holley. (I think Pete mentioned this a few months ago.) I figured it'd be a good setup for when I upgrade to the 3.4L. Runs great now - although it's too tall and I have to add a hood scoop or something to make room for an air cleaner. (I'll upload some pics if anyone is interested.) Removed the vacuum canister, air pump, extra vacuum lines, EGR valve, etc... shhh! :eek: Anyway, my problem now is starting. When cold it starts first crank no problem. But when warm it seems like the battery is dying. It turns over super slow a couple times before it fires. It didn't have this problem before the carb swap. I have only one belt on the alternator now (after removing the air pump) but it doesn't slip and I'm not running baggillion watt subwoofers or anything. So, any ideas? Clean, corrosion free connections, full battery, etc. Would that make a difference? I mean, good when cold, bad when warm? I thought cranking power diminished in cold... 'course, I'm just a noob. Wildman Posted January 4, 2008 Share Posted January 4, 2008 I'll throw this out there, I know nothing about the 2.8 (except to stay away from them) But, how close is the starter to the exhaust pipes?? I've had this problem with Ford 302's and 351W's the starter is only an inch away from the right bank exhaust pipe, and it bakes the starters, yea, new one every year, and when the starter is hot after a long run, it don't want to spin as fast as when it's a cold start.
