MississippiComanche
After having a few belts shred recently...I discovered that my ac compressor pulley sticks out too far and is not aligned with the other pulleys. Not sure if this is due to an aftermarket compressor that doesn't fit or what. I've owned this for 20 years and never noticed it until now. eaglescout526
What does the barcode on the compressor say?

eaglescout526
Yeah looks like a replacement compressor. As far as alignment, it’s possible it’s no longer aligned.
MississippiComanche
Eagle can you send me pic of your compressor and engine bay so I can compare? I know you have the 2.5L
eaglescout526
Yeah absolutely! Let me find you a good pic right quick. I have a NOS OEM one in use but it lines up pretty well.
eaglescout526
I don’t have a side or good top pic at the moment. I’ll snap some for you this evening.
MississippiComanche
Sounds good. I'll check in later. I just got done pulling the original power steering pulley to bend some dents out of it. I would buy a new one but these are impossible to find. eaglescout526
I think the 4.0 used the same pulley but don’t quote me on that. I’d have to double check that too.

MississippiComanche
so I considered getting a bypass pulley but it appears thats a pain in the a** to find for the 2.5L MJ/XJ. I may just have to bite the bullet and buy a new compressor.
MississippiComanche
also do you think its possible someone put the pulley on backwards? When I try to compare pics it appears that way but not sure.
eaglescout526
Well it depends on the pulley. Hell someone could’ve bought a compressor for a 4.0L not knowing if there was a difference which between the two is marginal unless you get the sanden 708. I’d just get a new compressor and dryer and charge the system. If that’s your plan. But a AC delete pulley would be a 4.0L one but even then an AC delete is more just changing the brackets out to a alt only one.
MississippiComanche
what makes the Sanden 708 good for this?...and are there other replacement compressors you recommend. I would like to keep my AC but most important thing to me right now is getting that alignment straight for my belt.
MississippiComanche
Also I am still educating myself on repairing one on an MJ. Any how-to threads pertaining to this topic?
MississippiComanche
Anybody know if this kit will work? https://jeepair.com/products/1987-1990-comanche-compressor-kit-with-4-diameter-drier?variant=32067024158805

I would like to keep my AC but most important thing to me right now is getting that alignment straight for my belt. The sanden 708 is just a 7 piston version of the 508, 508 was standard with AC for a bit. I think the 708 was found only on the 4.0 though. But I think you have a compressor with a pulley for a 4.0L, can any 4.0L guys with AC confirm this? I recommend trying to stick with sanden as they were the OEM supplier for AMC and Chrysler, if they’re available. I’ll provide some part numbers for you this evening so you can find the right compressor.

Has it not been converted yet? I’ll get part numbers for a dryer and expansion valve too for ya.
MississippiComanche
I appreciate it. No mine has not been converted and still has the r12. Please let me know everything I need to convert it. I plan on tackling AC/heat as soon as I finish replacing valve cover, radiator, and electric fan conversion this weekend. eaglescout526
Easy. You can keep your original hoses so long they aren’t cracked or tearing. You’ll basically need a new expansion valve, dryer and compressor. If you plan on converting. Course if you want to use the R12, there still might be parts out there for R12
MississippiComanche
I'm assuming I'll need new O rings as well? Also I need the Sanden 508 for the 2.5L?
