'89 MJ 4.0L renix - Radiator fan question

Recommended Posts

My MJ was converted to an open cooling system and had 2 aftermarket electric cooling fans replace the clutch fan. They kept the original electric fan for the A/C, however there were no shrouds placed back on. It runs hot, especially when idleing. Rebuilt engine was just placed in it and now I'm getting ready to replace the entire radiator with an all in one radiator and three built in fans from Alloyworks.

My question - these fans were set to run off the temp sensor on the thermostat housing and the temp guage is connected to the rear block temp sensor.  Where should these fans be hooked up?  This sounds like it's backwards to me.

If you have not bought the assembly with the electric fans, let me convince you to omit them. Buy the original fan shroud and clutch, upgrade to the ZJ clutch if desired and buy the electric cooling fan from a 97+ XJ. This setup will keep your 4 Liter cool and happy...

If you go with the three fan setup, this should include all relays and harness to operate properly, all you would need to ensure is that you get a temp switch that turns the fans on at the temperature of your choice. The thermostat housing is a great spot to mount the temp switch.

Try Rockauto.com, it's my go to besides Amazon and Ebay.

Given the age of the OP's vehicle, getting an OEM clutch and an OEM electric fan is about zero.  That means aftermarket stuff.

Buying from the local auto parts store is a crap shoot, and most of the time, the stuff comes from China, which always makes me leery.

At least going to Rock Auto, you get to see what brands of stuff they offer, and choose accordingly.   My MJ has a e-fan made by Continental, which although it is not OEM, it is a reputable brand out of Europe.   The fact I could choose that brand (along with ones from China) on Rock-Auto makes them one of my favorite places to shop.

Get a 7 blade mechanical fan for a 4.0 on eBay, the Napa/Hayden hd clutch and run an oem Mopar 2001 XJ 10 blade e fan as your aux fan. Also get the mech fan shroud. I’ve been down this road and that’s the only combo that really works. The MJ’s stock electrical doesn’t have the capacity to run 3 e fans of sufficient cfm to replace the stock setup at alternator voltage (+/-14v).

Thanks for the info. I had already ordered the replacement, very easy install so I'll see how it goes and report back. If it doesn't meet my expectations I'll refer back to your infk and convert back to old style.  Thanks
