Why auto makers aren't making small pickups

When our trucks were new, they were mid-size pickups.  Now, next to a "small" truck today ours are tiny.  Park next to a Ford Ranger or Maverick, or a Jeep Gladiator you will see what I mean.  This video explains why.

To me the biggest reason is the chicken tax. Completely stifles innovation. There are plenty of small trucks and vans around the world, they just can't be imported here without a 25% tax. They also would easily meet the fuel economy requirements. Basically, the big 3 have a protected monopoly for trucks. (No wonder they keep raising prices). The EPA also set lower fuel economy standards for trucks due to the intense lobbying from the domestic auto industry who would cease to exist without trucks. The standards were set just in case the Chicken tax was repealed; they thought the higher fuel economy ratings would keep imports out. BTW Buick doesn't make trucks so it an irrelevant argument.
