Frame Rot

Recommended Posts

So I took my MJ to a friends to see his M715 http://home.comcast.net/~rossmd/bb.htm and take some measurements for building a bumper and repairing some frame rot. I didn't like what I saw

So we went ahead and cut and bent some 2x2x1/4 to match the rail. It took 3 bends (the obvious and the two polished sections on the bottom) to get a decent fit and a notch for the bed support.

Its not going to win any beauty contests... that frame rail was dirty and did not agree with the MIG even when brought to a shine.

Not sure if I will take the time to cut this off and rebuild the frame. I would like to add some steel to attach rock rails. The rails would hopefully provide some ladder support. I am thinking about buying these.

I wouldn't center them, My 78" rails are about 2 inches short, but I put the rail all the way forward and left the gap at the rear tire for a few reasons.

I'm much more likely to drop the cab onto a rock after the front tire goes over it.

THe sheetmetal on the bed is easier to repair/cut off.

Puttin the rail farther back would have made it more likely for me to catch the end of it on a rock, and get hung up.
