JYau Posted July 14, 2022 Share Posted July 14, 2022 I've been doing some work on my Comanche (88, 2.5L, 4 speed) and been following Cruiser's electrical upgrades and I stumbled on a connector out in the engine bay that didn't connect to anything. Looking at the electrical troubleshooting manual I have identified it as the throttle position sensor connector. So where I am lost is that according to the electrical manual, there should be two connectors coming from the sensor, one end goes to the ECU, and then the other end (the end that goes no where in my rig) should go to the TCU (transmission control unit). The reason why nothing is plugged into the square connector is that the throttle position sensor only has one cable coming out of it and that is plugged into the ECU connector. Looking online I see both types of TPS available. The single sensor with a connector on the back vs. the sensor with pair of cables coming out the back. As of right now the truck runs great and I have no issues. The question is: Do I need to replace the TPS and get the correct one with the two connectors and what happens when the TCU doesn't get it's input? If your equipped with the AUTO trans your TPS would have both the 3pin and 4pin connectors. Since your vehicle is a MANUAL your TPS only has the 3pin connector. cruiser54 Posted July 15, 2022 Share Posted July 15, 2022 Yup. From Tip 8 at the end: For those with a MANUAL TRANSMISSION–the TPS for the manual transmission XJs is stupid expensive. You can substitute the automatic transmission TPS which is reasonably priced. The square 4 wire connector is just not used. It's not surprising that the manual and autos use the same harness, but to me it is a bit surprising that there isn't some plug for that connector to plug into even if it doesn't go anywhere.
