Agreen
1986 Jeep Comanche 2.8 AX5 2wd LWB Build date: Illegible. Seems like it has faded off. Current Location: Near Augusta,GA Status: Just bought it 24 Apr, 2022. P.O. said it hadn't ran in 5 years. I got it running in one day with a new battery, starter relay, and (eventually) a fuel filter and a carb rebuild kit. I'm (currently) daily driving it. Notes: Has a D44, but I don't know if it's factory. It has a 3.54 ratio and it's a limited slip axle. Seems like it's a weird combination of that engine/transmission/rear axle. Current owner: Terrence Brunson I'd like to know which trim this truck is and if it has the Metric Ton (or whatever we call it stateside) package. Pete M
how many factory leafs in the leaf pack? 3+1 is standard. 4+1 is MT for 86. theoretically the dana 44 wasn't available yet though. the AMC-20 was the heavy duty axle for 86.
Agreen
It's 3+1. I wasn't sure which one is original. Did the leafs get replaced or did the axle? Sounds like the axle is the answer.

Agreen
Thanks eaglescout526! That's pretty cool. Any idea what the CGW package meant in 1986? I didn't think the 86 comanche was offered with an airbag option?
eaglescout526
No problem! We don't know what it exactly meant yet. We need more 86 build sheets/literature that has more of these codes to piece it together.
Agreen
I wonder if that's the code for the wheels? Mine are the 10 spoke aluminum ones with black jeep logo center caps (which I still have all 4 of) I need better pictures. I only have the ones from when I pulled it out of its 5 year resting place. It also has that funky brake bias pushrod thing on the rear end as well.
Pete M
13 minutes ago, Agreen said: It also has that funky brake bias pushrod thing on the rear end as well. all MJs have that. the original code list for your truck would be 4 or 5 times as long as what you see there. if you go look at a 91 or 92 MJ, you'll see what I mean. early years have far more missing info. eaglescout526
Wait. Was CGW the airbag knee bolster one?
Pete M
don't remember. you might need to re-run the vin to get that.
Agreen
I found this inside the door. They stabbed the window crank through it, but it's mostly legible.
Pete M
sweet! how does it compare to the digital printout?
Agreen
I'll be honest. I snapped this picture while I was working on replacing the corner window, and I was kind of in a rush. The sun was going down and I plan on taking it to work tomorrow. I now regret not getting a better shot. Looking at what is there, it doesn't really seem to match. And to make it worse, the axle rations apparently supposed to be 4.10, and mine is 3.55. Explains the gutlessness I guess. That old 2.8 doesn't make much power. But! The current axle IS a D44, so that's nice. I guess it likely had a 35 originally.
