My connector looks like roofing tar

I wonder if this has anything to do with the 4.0 sputtering?

Very typical. Most people delete this connector entirely. However, contact cleaner and a toothbrush can clean that up and you can put Di-electric grease back in the connector afterward.

Yeah, that's the factory dielectric goop.  Very gross, sticks to everything, it sucks.

I guarantee that the connector going to your under dash fuse harness is in identical shape just FYI.

Dang. Doesn’t sound like it’s gonna be easy to get to either?

Its not super easy but it isnt that hard either. It just has one bolt (I think 7mm) holding the plug together but there isnt a lot of room to get down there.

I've been told the main harness bolt may have changed to metric over the years, but on my '87 it is definitely 1/4"
