The engine is, the wiring is not. 87-88s have a C101 connector and a different ECU. I’m sure there are some other differences too, but if you are just swapping engines and not the wiring, it will all work.

However the wiring harnesses do swap and swapping to get rid of the C101 is pretty popular.  The 89-90 ECU swaps too and also has a different fuel curve that gives you a little more horsepower.
