Wiring Harness

I have a quick question. The wiring harness for the dash/lights and blinkers, is it the same for Cherokees and Comanches? For example, if I were to cut out the harness from a 95 XJ, would everything work on an 89 MJ?  The MJ I bought had been hit by a deer, and the wiring harness was the biggest issue. I tried patching up as much as I could, but the only lights that work are the actual headlights. The blinkers and hazards do not work. I am hoping to just swap harnesses over, and hope the lights work.

Um, 1987-90 should be the same or very similar. 91-94-95 the dash and engine harness bulk head plug are different. I think the headlight harness is the same from 1986 to 1994(-6?) so this could be swapped out.

 

If your dash harness is trashed I’d recommend sourcing another renix era for a complete swap. Far as cutting and splicing, I don’t know. A lot of the plugs are the same on the dash side from 1984 until 1994.

Also, my radio (which is some cheap aftermarket) never has worked, and I never thought to check it's fuse. Its fuse is completely melted on one side, it's the correct amp, 15, but that would explain why my radio has never worked. On the other hand, could the radio fuse melting have affected any of the other fuses maybe?

The brake light plug can melt at the brake pedal, I’ve had that problem in my 85 xj. A lot of early dash harness have a issue with the brake light switch plug although the one I sourced from a 1986 xj was in perfect condition.

Far as turn signal and parking lights I’ve had a hell of a time sorting out shorts for the turn signals and park lights when I updated them to led front and back, the round relay thingy in the fuse box is what clicks as they operate, a bad one or in my case one that is sensitive to the load on it can cause problems.
I swapped out a headlight harness because the turn left signal socket had problems.

I forget which year it was, might be 91 up, but Jeep had power for the brake light draw from a wire that went straight to the battery bypassing a lot of the fuse boxes. The more I think about it it probably was the early HO jeeps.

Radio melting the fuse make me think the radio was wired wrong and something that’s supposed to ground has power to it. Although if the fuse was the amp it shouldn’t have melted.

Your going to need a voltmeter. Remove the HAZ/STOP fuse. Place one lead on metal clip and other lead to ground and measure voltage. Do this on both metal clips.

Not sure. The thing that made the previous owner sell it was that it hit a deer. This messed with some of the wiring for the lights. I thought he mentioned something about him or some local shop trying to fix some of the wiring, specifically the turn signals, but maybe the missing fuse was all they were missing? I think I have a voltmeter somewhere, I'll go check it.

Just tested the HAZ/STOP fuse, it's fine. The brake light switch has only 1 of 2 prongs connected. There are all kinds of wire connections dangling around there. If let's say one of them need to be connected to the switch in order for it to work, then could that also be what's keeping the hazards from wanting to work?
