Eagle
I just looked up Tyndall AFB on Google Maps. Good grief! Who the [bleep]in' [bleep] ever thought it was a good idea to construct a permanent Air Force base on a barrier island? Tyndall was originally a gunnery range during WW2, and it made sense (from the non-environmentally oriented perspective of WW2) to use a barrier island as a gunnery range -- all you're bombing and strafing is swamp and pine trees. But to build it up into a long-term, major air base? Idiocy. Now that Mother Nature has started the work, the gummint should just raze the whole base down to the ground, restore the site to some semblance of natural barrier island ecology, and relocate Tyndall (or its functions) either to a new base to be built inland, or to a nearby (relatively) base that's farther inland. To rebuild the base would be monumantally stupid.
HOrnbrod
Maybe you should call the U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff with your plan. Reminds me of the 1991 Mt Pinatubo volcanic eruption in the Philippines that took out the Subic Bay Naval Station, Clark Air Base, and several other smaller facitities. That was great fun being there at the time. Our gov used the opportunity to pull all the military out of the Philippines a year later rather than rebuild. I'd still be there if they decided to rebuild. Natural disasters can happen anywhere, anytime. Relocating the facility would be a lot more expensive than rebuilding. Ain't going to happen. Looks more like a combination of wildlife refuges, state, and national parks/forests. Where are all these military bases of which you speak? Where are all these military bases of which you speak? Quote Pensacola Naval Air Station, Whiting Field, Hurlburt Field, Eglin AFB (the big one), Tyndall AFB, Eglin AFB (Eastern Exclave) Eglin in Fort Walton beach is 463,500 acres, Tyndall of Panama City is 29,109 acres and Pensacola is 5,874 acres...Just about the only decent-sized city NOT near a military base in the panhandle is Tallahassee. Read more: http://www.city-data.com/forum/florida/504867-florida-panhandle-u-s-military-bases.html#ixzz5Twtlh37g My wife's oldest was stationed at Hurlburt for 5 years, we stayed on base as guests which was quite interesting. He is now stationed in Belgium but maintains a home in Navarre. I've been to the panhandle many times, driving through you'll notice you are driving from one restricted area to another. The military presence is everywhere. https://militarybases.com/florida/ The Coast Guard, of course. https://www.cnic.navy.mil/regions/cnrse/installations/nsa_panama_city/about/tenant_commands/us_coast_guard_eighth_district.html There is also a Marine base in Pensacola https://www.trngcmd.marines.mil/Units/Southeast/MATSG-21/ You'll find the Army in the panhandle as well https://www.eglin.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/810637/7th-special-forces-group-a/ The Redneck Riviera, or as I call it, Alabama South. You should get out more, really. And, like whether or not cars rust in FL, why would I lie? It's a serious question, why would I lie about anything? I won't tell you about the NE, don't tell me about FL.
Jeep Driver
My wife with her sons at Hurlburt. The man to her left is AF. The short pudgy boy is mine except that he's not short and pudgy anymore. :)
