Fuel Sending Unit

I have been a member here for several years, but this is my first posting.  I currently drive an '87 XJ and have picked up an '89 Comanche as an eventual replacement.  The Comanche has been a project for the three years I have had it and is currently stripped down for paint.  a few months ago, I went to start it and had no action from the fuel pump.  In the process of changing the fuel pump, I discovered that the sending unit is shot (the wire wound rheostat is broken and the resistor wire in all unraveled at the top)

 

My understanding is that these are hard to come by new, but there are several rebuilders who can repair them.  Has anyone had any experience with any of them that you would recommend?

I'd be interested in knowing as well. I'm seeking a 23.5 gal OEM fuel tank (complete+lines+etc) for my '88 Long Bed Comanche. Adding a 2nd on psgr side. It's likely I'll have this very question you have here.

In your case I would rob the parts from an Xj sender and fix yours , just make sure to get a renix one ( unless you're going HO ) . 

 

If if you want to go the rebuilders route , spectra did a good job rebuilding all the ones we sent them when I worked in parts . It takes them a bit to do it ( like 4 weeks ) but it seems like that might not be an issue for you .

I sent my fuel sending unit into tristarradiator: http://tristarrradiator.com based out of Seneca Falls, New York. They were great to work with, fair priced, and fast turnaround. I maybe going to them here in the near future to have a second fuel sending unit repaired.

Thanks for the replies on this topic.  I got a Renix Cherokee fuel pump module from a mechanic friend with an in tact sender on it.  I think I can manage to fix my sender using these parts.  If not, the next option I will explore is a trip to the rebuilder.

I want to say it wasn't more than $150, but I don't recall as it was a few years back. I can say that the service was fast and they were easy and great to work with. Really helpful on all fronts. Here in the very near future I am going to be contacting them again to rebuild the fuel sending unit on the new jeep that I have.
