bcbill
Hi guys, have recently picked up my 3rd mj, 2 wd, 1991 long box, with 5 speed(AX-15) newer 4.0, serial # search says it has 3:07 rear diff. Would like to convert to 4wd.Local jy has a front 4x4 axle from 1990 Cherokee serial # search says it has 3:07, I am gonna assume it would be vac operated, which I again assume is an easy fix? Question is should I look into using transfer case from the 90 Cherokee or look for a later year, would the 90 Cherokee have a Peugeot tranny or Ax15? Pete M
I would use this opportunity to change both axles and get better gear ratios.
Crash
90XJ could have either trans. You would need to confirm Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk
Eagle
90XJ could have either trans. You would need to confirm Sent from my SM-N910T using Tapatalk No. The BA 10/5 was phased out early in the 1989 model year. Most '89s had the AX-15, and all '90s had the AX-15. bcbill
So the transfer case from the 90 should be compatible with the AX15 in my 91?hoping to pull everything from the one cherokee.. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Eagle
The transfer case will work, but I share the advice to swap both your axles to get a better ratio. XJ axles out of any 4.0L automatic should be 3.54 ratio, which is a lot more civilized than 3.07.
bcbill
The rear diff is Dana 44, finding 3:54 for the 44 might be a challenge but probably not impossible, something to dwell on, was just happy to find the 3:07 and hadn't thought about changing ratio. Pete M
I can understand the conundrum. the good thing is that the 44 is worth sinking money into it. 4.10s are a nice improvement to a 4.0/stickshift :D

Pete M
far as I know, early AW-4s are 21 spline. AX-15s are all
bcbill
The donor is 90 Cherokee 5speed, will check when I pull transfer case and let you know what the spline count is... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
