Ford 8.8 help

Recommended Posts

I have decided to go with the common Ford 8.8 axle swap on my MJ. I feel pretty comfortable with the swap however, I was looking for some clarification on the proper years I would be looking for. I found a 2004 that is pretty good shape with these specs: 2004-2004 Rear Axle; (4 Dr), exc. Sport Trac; differential mounted ABS sensor, 3.73 ratio, w/limited slip differential,3.73 LOCKER. Only thing I every found stated that I wanted to find an explorer between 1995 and 2001, is this true? Thanks for the help.

I'm not sure what that axle will be like.  The Explorer (with the exception of the relatively rare Sport model) went to IRS in 2002, hence people say to get one from prior to that.  The Sport Trac was also generally viewed as undesirable for an axle donor, as it seemed to share the rear axle with the Ranger, meaning it had 28 spline axle shafts and drum brakes.  However, I don't know if that was true only for 00-01 models, or if it actually is even true at all.  I suspect the Explorer Sport 2002+ and the Sport Trac probably shared rear axles, but hard to say...

I'd go measure how wide it is.  My suspicion would be that it is wider than the typical Explorer 8.8, as like all SUVs, the Explorer got bigger with each generation.

Um, that 2004 may be ok.

Supposedly 2002 2 dr sport explorers is ok and SportTrac from production date Aug 19 2002 to June 28 2005 are ok to use, 31 spline and the same as the 1995-2001 axels.

I don't know this info first hand, read it online, I'd check the axel codes and maybe measure it to double check.

Info can be found here
