Crash
Rundown of my MJ.. 1988- 4.0L/BA-10/5 Truck originally had dummy gauge cluster. I swapped in a full gauge cluster, and the fuel gauge reads backwards. PO - a friend of mine swapped in a new Delphi? fuel pump asy before I got it. My guess is that is has a HO pump/sender? That would explain why it reads backwards, correct? As IIRC the senders read opposite resistance Renix vs HO. Anyways, I have an HO full gauge cluster from a 92, and was wondering if the fuel gauge asy is a plug n pray swap in the gauge clusters? Any help is appreciated, TIA. Keyav8r
What year model MJ or XJ did the full gauge cluster come from? If it is from an HO year model, that's the reason it's reading backwards. Did the fuel gauge in the dummy cluster work correctly? Try swapping in a gauge from a pre-91 XJ or MJ and it should work correctly. If someone has the PN for the Renix gauge I'll see if one of the gauges I have will work. If your friend just swapped in a new pump it would have no effect on the reading as the sending unit for the gauge is separate from the pump (but mounted on the same bracket). The only gauges that are interchangeable to both Renix and HO gauge cluster housings are the oil pressure, coolant temp, and voltmeter.
Eagle
I wonder if reversing the two wires for the fuel gauge at the connector to the cluster would reverse the way the fuel gauge reads.

Original 88 dummy gauge MJ, swapped in full gauge 89 XJ. Fuel read backwards on original and same on swapped in gauge. Is there anything behind the fuel gauge asy. itself that could be swapped?
JFMcEwan
Blk and Vio are off the fuel gauge sender. Then to the back of the cluster the vio splits to two tan wires to the instrument cluster conns Pin # 15 and
