SBpunk
Picked up a few parts from the junkyard the other day. Couldn't get to the Durango pitman arm after about 3 hours so basically walked out with the in-line cooler and a V8 WJ pump (someone got the hydraulic fan already). There weren't any S10 gear boxes but lucked out and found one on ebay with under 100k miles out of a ZR2 4x4 for 50$.My DD is a 2004 WJ Overland that needs special (expensive) mopar steering fluid for the pump. I'm guessing since the pumps are the same this one won't be able to use off the shelf fluids. Not a big deal but wanted to double check and make sure my common sense wasn't leading me in the wrong direction. Depending on if the steering gear gets here today or tomorrow I should have it all installed before the end of the weekend. Can't do much else since I'm still waiting on my leaf springs..... HOrnbrod
Why are/were you looking for an S10 steering gear?
SBpunk
Mine is about done for and head they are a good replacement. Direct bolt in, same turning radius and the internals have a better set up. Not sure on why exactly since I couldn't find any info but for the price / miles figured I'd give it a shot until I can find a cheap Durango box to try and take apart and learn how to remove the stops that kill the turning radius. HOrnbrod
I think the steering ratio on those is even slower than the stock MJ/XJ box's 14:1, but I'm not positive. You would have to bench test it by counting the output shaft revolutions when turning from stop-to-stop.
SBpunk
It's mostly a pavement vehicle. Dirt roads and camping trails so not too worried. But I'll compare and post up when it gets here. Should be today

Rockfrog
They are essentially the same Vox as used in an XJ/MJ/TJ Some of the earlier units had bearing where the Jeep units used bushings. If you were to get a reman unit reports indicate it is the exact same box now. If you get it cheap, go for it, just be aware the S10 guys are swapping Jeep units in as an upgrade. Durango or J20 boxes are still the best upgrade. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
HOrnbrod
Durango or J20 boxes are still the best upgrade. Beefier but too slow. "The best" depends what you use your rig for.
Rockfrog
The XJ - wheeling, stock box is more than fast enough for me. Slower is fine as well and most of my escapades are in slow time. Squeezing between places with hairs clearance, pushing balance and such. For this one beef is more important turning 35's than a quick ratio anyday The MJ - driving to work, and towing the trailer, hauling crap and my quad about the planet. So a stock box covers my needs. The OP's needs may differ. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
SBpunk
Just a daily driver for me. Trying to improve whatever needs replacing if there is something out there better than stock. Was going to do the Durango swap but turning radius is most important. The stock box is amazing but I thought I read the 2001+ 4x4 s10 boxes were built better. Worse case I'm out 50 bucks and need to start looking for a zj one.
