My 88 Comanche Restoration and Modification

Recommended Posts

Its called dustless blasting, which is pressure washing with small amount of crushed glass bead added (basically sand). Used about 600lbs of it.

The paint line up is coming together.

1. POR Marine Clean - Misted with spray bottle

2. POR Metal Ready - Misted with spray bottle

3. POR 15 Rust preventor - Brushed on

4. Bondo or epoxy putty - Spread like peanut butter (Yet to buy)

5. Seam Seal- Caulk gunned

6. POR High Build Primer (most likely) - Sprayed (Yet to buy)

7. POR 2K Urathane Top Coat - Sprayed

8. Raptor Liner in the bed and Cab floor - Sprayed

9. Bumpers, cage, and rockers will get spray paint black

1 quart of POR self etch primer and POR high build primer ordered, this will only be for areas getting top coated, but I will be trying to stretch it as far as I can.

1lbs POR epoxy putty ordered

This rig will be a real testament to POR products when its done.

That's a cool process.  Nobody around here does it, which is kinda too bad, I need something like that done on my old J truck cab.

The last piece of the floor puzzle, at the end of the tunnel

Inner y thing. The two tubes going up and slightly off center, but I don't care. These are welded in place solid. The truck will be painted and then the cage put on and welded in, then the cage points will get painted. I didn't make it a true x cause this isn't going to be a race car, and that space will make fore some needed inside storage. Thing I'm going to make mesh bags, to hang right there.

Sunday was rainy so I did some axle stuff.

I keep working and there keeps being more work.

I welded steering box spacer stand offs onto the inner frame plating.

I wanted to make each of the cage tubes wrap the slider like the first picture. I didn't do math, cut twice and measured once, so i attached these to support the overhanging tube.

Finished up the rear bumper with some tubes that wrap the corner, these wrap nice and tight with the bed cut a 3/4 inch below the lower body line. Trying to make it stay comanche'esk when you look at it. The open tubes have been capped, but I didn't take a picture.

The plan is to paint next weekend. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are to bring heavy rain. So I'm betting on it being another beautiful weekend next weekend after the passing storm.

All I need is the Por15 on and then i can rest easy. Priming and top coating whenever. As i look at these pictures everything looks so rusty, glad to know the best Paint Over Rust paint is about to be slapped on.

The blasters did  a poor job when you think about how they seemed to miss the hard to reach spot and get all the easy spots. I have to get all the primer I sprayed throughout the build off the bottom of the frame rails.

The chassis is black.

Ended up being windy so there are a lot of dust specs

I figured it would be best to throw some top coat on the roof, behind to door cab section, and A-Pilar so I can weld the cage on and then spray the rest of the truck with some quality control.  The top coat ran horribly, but it helps me move forward.

I block sanded the blue to make it look presentable. I'm hoping the sprayed topcoat will take care of the remaining small surface waves.

I'm thinking of color matching the cage. Painting it blue.  I need your opinion.   The thought was that it would trick the eye and blend in.

  • 2 weeks later...

Tried to paint the cab, cage, and engine bay. Primer went on well the top coat didn't. The combination of poor thinning, ignorance of paint spraying in general, and a 35 buck amazon spray gun didn't amount to a great finish. The top coat would barely spray, I don't know how the cage ended up as blue as it did given the circumstances.

  • 2 months later...

I put the doors on to help keep snow out. My drivers window will only go half way up.

Tossed the nose/grill on to keep my tarps from ripping.

Anyway. I could be putting the interior back together but i wasted a warm weather window re-roofing the garage, really... who needs a roof. So I have yet to raptor line the floors.

oh, I bought a  C.R. Laurence rear window on amazon. It actually looks really good. Huge rear double slider.

So here's this update of a very blue looking caged Comanche waiting patiently

50 degree day

Seam sealed the cab floor. I might make this thing a submarine instead.

Raptor Lined the floors. Everyone could and should do this.  can't wait to do the other truck areas. (rockers and bed) So much change with so little effort isn't something i'm used to
