pigg
Hi everbody I need my MJ to get lower gears since I'm running 35"s and I'm gonna go for 4.88 in my axles. Rear axle is Dana 44 with OEM limited slip. Front is a Dana 30 HP from a 1996 XJ. Current gears in the axles are 3.54. What do i need to think about when I'm ordering rings and pinions for the axles? Do i need to change the carriers i both axles to fit 4.88? Please come with some input guys
HOrnbrod
For the D44 axle the carrier break is 3.73 which normally means a new carrier. But, you can keep your existing carrier by using "thick" 4.88 gears; they are available. I did this going from 3.55 to 4.10 because I had a new limited slip carrier and wanted to use it. Has worked well for many years now. For the D30 I think you are SOL because I've never seen "thick" 4.88 gears for them. They may exist though...... :dunno:

Since it seems there is no 4.88 carrier that will fit my OEM limited slip, A THICK 4.88 WOULD BE A LIFESAVER!!! Any idea where i can get one???? pigg
Maybe you could use the money that you saved for a limited slip carrier for your D30. Thats exactly what I'm gonna do!
