SaharaMJ
Hi Guy's, My long term project MJ conversion here in the UK is finally progressing after it's been sitting in a corner for the last 10 years gathering dust! Its an 88 truck (the one in the movie SAHARA) which I've converted to RHD from using all the parts from a 2000MY BUX XJ. Is there a junk yard rear prop-shaft / driveshaft that I can use or is it a custom part only? Thanks in advance. PS, If there's posts covering this already, please point me in the right direction. Many thanks. Eliot.
Incommando
If you find a junkyard MJ with the same tranny/transfer case/rear axle as what you will swap in then you can use that one. Otherwise having your current shaft shortened is usually the most cost effective route. There is a sticky in one of the categories that tells the length of the various combos. HOrnbrod
It will be a custom shaft as MJs never came from the factory as RHD vehicles. I'm assuming you swapped all the RHD drivetrain in from the 2000 XJ? Then you can either have the XJ shaft lengthened or have a new custom shaft made locally if that's doable in the UK where you live.
mikekaz1
as far as I'm aware the running gear are the same LHD to RHD its just the steering components that are different (steeringbox, column, various linkages). the shifters are still the same and the tcase is still "drivers side drop" (left hand drop) along with axles. mikekaz1
curious though, is it the actual one used in the movie? how did you aquire that? that's pretty cool.
SaharaMJ
Thanks for the replies. Just wondered if a ZJ or WG shaft could be used... but I'm sure that would have come up if it was possible. Yes, the 2000 XJ donated most of the parts. RHD & LHD drivetrain are indeed the same layout. I owned the MJ for a few months before it was hired for filming in Morocco. It was a pretty good deal, but they made a mess of it with stage paint, and they managed to heavily damage the left rear panel. They actually wanted to burn out the truck, but I insisted on it being returned.
