Air Box Replacement

Recommended Posts

I was swapping some hoses and one of the plastic hose fittings on the airbox cover broke off with the hose. I've had no luck finding a replacement at the junkyards or online. Am I correct that it would need to be an '86-'90 Cherokee/Comanche in order to fit on my '89?

Or has anyone found the cold air intake kits to be worth the money? Thanks.

You can:

1.  On my XJ I used a piece of plastic hose and epoxied it in the vacant hole...six years ago...still there, still passing smog, in California.

2. Jump on ebay and search "Jeep XJ airbox".

3. If smog inspections are not a big deal where you are, you can just tack on a Spectra style intake on there for about $30.  Looks cool too.

The cold air intakes might solve your problem but won't add much in the performance area...so, IMHO not worth the money when you could solve it by getting a little creative and repairing the existing box.

If you are not locked into using stock OE parts..... and have a couple of minutes to do some modding......basically any MJ , XJ, TJ, YJ (and maybe a couple more) can be "tweaked" to fit your truck.

If you like the Idea of giving your motor access to more air....here is a cheap and easy mod I do to all my air boxes....

Lets in more air and gives it a "throatier" growl when you step on the gas.

Appreciate the ideas. I'd like to leave it stock. So I'll try epoxy or maybe a barbed hose fitting until I run across a replacement. I've found plenty of 91+ but haven't had any luck finding a Renix era. Thank you both!
