Jackrabbit41
These two questions are completely unrelated. The clicking I'm going to describe isn't from the cable. (Cable used to click but not anymore). First: Ever since AX15 swap speedo hasn't work at all. It won't even move. The cable works fine with a drill on the end of it, speedo gear isn't the right tooth but It is in good condition, and the gear in the T-case is also good. When I put the speedo gear into the T-Case it feels like they are meshing but maybe not? I need a new speedo gear due to 4.10s and tire size but do y'all think that'll fix it? Second: Ever since this Sunday after my axle swap, I have this weird clicking noise that is always there other then when I'm braking hard or going down a hill. It sounds like plastic tapping plastic pretty fast and doesn't really change much. What could it be? thanks. It comes and goes but is mostly going. gogmorgo
Check your calliper bolts? Re: the speedometer issue, the gear assembly has to be clocked depending on what gear you have. There's a mark on the hole, somewhere around the 5 o'clock position, and there are sets of numbers around the edge of the assembly. The numbers are ranges of gear teeth, so if you have a 34-tooth gear, you pick 32-36 (can't remember actual ranges and too lazy to look them up), or if you have a 27 tooth, you'd pick 27-31. The speedometer gear isn't centred in the assembly, so changing the clocking moves it further into or out of the output gear. If it's too far out, it won't mesh, if it's too far in, Well, I don't know for sure what would happen, but I don't think it would be beneficial. The assembly hold-down fork sits in notches in the assembly, so there are only about four positions it can go in.

It sounds like it's coming from under the dash somewhere but I'm not entirely sure.
gogmorgo
Does it sound like a relay clicking? Do you have a trailer brake controller? My dad's clicks sometimes. Have you had anyone check to see what your brake lights are doing when it's clucking?

ParadiseMJ
The speedo on my XJ had been clicking for sometime, it'd click up to 45 mph and then it would stop. Behind the dash where the cable plugs in to the cluster was pulled out (when I swapped clusters) to where it just was catching the spindle. I just reattached it and went under the Jeep to give it a bit more slack so it went in the needed 1/8 inch and stayed there. On the MJ when I swapped T-cases the cable was not fully engaged in the gear end in the t-case. the speedo didn't move but it clicked. When I put a drill on it worked fine. So I ruled out a broken cable. I found why it wasn't engaging in the gear...the old gear had goop/shavings in the female part so the spindle wouldn't go in. When I cleaned it all out it cured the problem. Good speedo, no click.

I've had that problem before and this is a different click but thanks anyway
